No, i think they changed it recently so it's valid for a year from re-entry (ooer) - there must be some rules though, maybe if you have a valid NZ licence you can't ride on a foreign one??

You're talking $hite. It's valid for one year from LAST entrance to country. Both LTSA web$hite and local copper clarified that for me. Otherwise I'd have been driving/riding illegally for past 11 months.

they don't the DVLA in swansea take your NZ licence and in return give you a uk licence ie you surrender your licence in the UK

pretty good deal as the uk licence is valid for life and the NZ licence has to be renewed every four years

as for the plonker Bike coresspondent, these wankers tear all over europe at high speed and write up about their exploits in the magazine press

trouble is when joe public goes over for a ride the plods are waiting and they have ruined it for the rest of us.

I've been wondering about this myself (not that I speed of course!) but the UK authorities do not require that you surrender your licence when you pick up another licence in another country (kiwis transferring to a UK licence have to return their Kiwi licence) I have therefore got 2 Dirvers licences - if my kiwi licence gets suspended theoretically I just need to pop out of the country...say Australia or New Caledonia and upon my return my UK Licence is valid for a year - should cover any bans I think.

Has anyone used this loophole at all?

Just out of interest - not that I'm gonna break the law or anything (like a VTR 250 will get above 100kph!)
I see ya all been reading the halfwits book of road rules again.

when u get disqualified from driving the nice judge will tell you "you are disqualified from holding or obtaining a licence for a period of ______"

holding a licence gives you the right to drive. You should surrender your licence when u get disqualified or suspended or this is another charge you can be pinged with. Only has a $500 max fine from memory

so when u Jet of to Oz and come back with your ozzie licence and get stopped and if the cop should do a check. Your vehicle will get impounded and u will get 6 months more disqualification at the end of the one you are serving if this is your 1st or 2nd offence or 1 year dizq if its your third or subsequent offence.

The other great thing u forget about is that if u get 2 traffic convitions with-in 4 years that have a sentence of imprisonment. Dangerous type, drink driving, disq driving, care less injury, under the sentencing act you car will be confiscated and sold and the proceeds go to the consolidated fund.

    128.Confiscation of motor vehicle—

(1)This section applies if a person is convicted of any of the following offences:
(a)an offence punishable by imprisonment for a term of more than 12 months, or by imprisonment for life:
(b)an offence against any of the provisions of sections 35(1)(a), 35(1)(b), [36A(1)(a) or (c),] 38(1), 39(1), or 56 to 60 of the Land Transport Act 1998 (which relate to driving offences).

(2)A court may exercise the power in subsection (3) if a person is convicted of an offence referred to in subsection (1) and the court by or before which the offender is convicted is satisfied that any motor vehicle owned by the offender or in which the offender has any interest at the time of conviction— (a)was used to commit or facilitate the commission of the offence, whether or not the offender was the driver or person in charge; or
(b)in the case of an offence against any of the provisions of sections 35(1)(a), 35(1)(b), 36(1)(a), [36A(1)(a) or (c),] 38(1), 39(1), and 56 to 62 of the Land Transport Act 1998, was being driven by, or in the charge of, the offender at the material time; or
(c)was used by the offender, whether or not the offender was the driver or person in charge, to facilitate the offender's flight or avoid his or her detection or arrest after the commission of the offence.

(3)The court may order that the motor vehicle be confiscated.

(4)The court may make an order under this section in addition to, or instead of, passing any other sentence or making any other order.

(5)In deciding whether to make an order under this section, the court must have regard to—
(a)any undue hardship that the making of the order would cause to the offender in relation to his or her trade, business, profession, occupation, or employment:
(b)any undue hardship that the making of the order would cause to any other person who would otherwise have the use or benefit of the motor vehicle on a regular basis:
(c)the nature and extent of the offender's interest in the motor vehicle, and the nature and extent of any other person's interest in it:
(d)any other considerations that the court thinks fit.

Thats different to what the LTSA say:

The UK have these agreements with other commonweath countries but there's always loopholes - just don't run anyone over cus they will probably look harder at your license!!

How can the half dozen Bike test riders/journalists ruin it for the rest of us? they would be spread pretty thin over Europe and England. Brits have been using Europe as a safe haven for speeding for years. I guess that will change if they ever do a reciprical arrangement with the EU on demerits or bans.

MUST - get an Oz licence one day when over there ...Over there, over there ...(bursts into stupid old song..) I'm just so upbeat about heading off on a long overdue bike trip. It's 10 past beer o'clock as well for me .
If you're from NZ and you get an Ozzie license, they punch a hole in your NZ license. I know because they did that to my license. fortunately, that expired not too long afterwards and i renewed my NZ license so now i've got both.

Thanks for that. I haven't seen BIKE in the magazine shops for a coupla months and was wondering if it had gone under.

Even bought "Cycle World" the other day to ease the withdrawal symptoms.

I wouldn't have thought they can legally do that - seeing as it wasn't issued by them. I'd tell em to take their stinking hands off my license!
