Played it tonight. I remember a fair bit of the story from being around in those times, but it is amazing to see again how rider safety wasn't treated as so important e.g. the Pasolini/Saarinen fatality on oil the officals wouldn't clean up and then Newcombe hitting a hard wall because they wouldn't put haybales in front of it. The sight of him crashing was something I hadn't seen before and he just went off the track kind of wobbly almost like the corner had psyched him out because of the wall. Its like everyone tells trail riders - don't look at trees as you will hit them - look where you want to go instead. Then 4 hours to get him to a hospital and the treatment given there sounded quite archaic compared to now, but then maybe he couldn't be saved anyway. All up an amazing story of a Kiwi doing well but unfortunately with a sad ending.

I watched it tonight also but the recording (or broadcast) played up at the end. Anyone got a torrent or DVD of it?

I hadn't heard of him before last year so this was a bit of an eye-opener for me. His wife never seemed to move on from his death really, a lot of guilt.

Yeah, must admit I hadnt seen the docu before, missed it when it played at the movies. His accident seemed so tragic especially as he identified that corner as being dangerous, and asking for haybales to be put up. But the Clerk of the Course disagreed and nothing was done, seemed as if Kim's bike almost seized as the rear wheel gave a bit of a skip, just before he crashed.
And yeah, the hospital treatment was shocking. Interesting that Giancarlo Falappa was in a coma for 38 days after hsi bad crash before he recovered, poor Janeen must've beat herself up with guilt they way they treated Kim in that hospital. You notice in the credits that she has since passed away? Hopefully she and Kim can at last be together again.....RIP.

A very moving documentary....
I'm not sure if you'd be able to follow it that well, if you didnt know what it was about and what had happened? You guys who hadnt heard of Kim Newcombe, how did you find the documentary?

I hadn't heard of him till I saw it at the movies, but I was astounded! Firstly by what he achieved and secondly by the lack of interest in safety of the authorities who were supposed to look after the racing/riders. That first big crash that took out those couple of riders should have been the end of that particular race but for the authorities to just ignore the danger and push them all back out again, is crazy.
Yeah times have changed now I guess and we are looking at it thru our PC corrected, wrap-everyone-in-cotton-wool eyes, but even so, I am amazed at just how callous they seemed to be. What would it have costed them to do as the riders asked?

Truly gutted that I fell asleep part way through it!! It was awesome, and eye opening, but I was just too damn tired.

Tried to hire it from Video Ezy Quay st yesterday, but they don't have it. Anyone know a video store that does?

The DVD will not be for sale in NZ for a little while longer.
but you can get it from Duke video

It is the full film version with 10 minutes more story,
it may have extras as well

... orsum way the story was told ... warts & all ... as per the title ... love speed & loss ... heart on the sleeve sort of stuff ... big ups to the team who managed to pull it all together ... another piece of kiwiana preserved on film for those of use who knew nothing about it ... how many other stories are out there ???

Good point. I wonder how much footage there is of Ginger Molloy and Keith Turner also coming second in the 500 championships in prior years? Those guys survived but never attempted the big one again. Croz also managed a best place in the championship of 2nd as well. We have had some good riders that's for sure.

With Kim it seems like his wife was just so devoted and she had her little movie camera going all the time. I think it was awesome his son Mark got to ride the bike in 2004 as well.

One very sad part of the story is what happened to Janeen afterwards. Tried to find a new bloke and got bashed badly by one for far too long and it sounds like about 3 long term relationships just never went well. Then she tells the story, very courageous.
