    XR200 honda timing chain adjustment

    Hi,
    XR200R
    The Timing chain adjustment nut, is correct that to adjust the timing chain you just slacken off the timing chain adjustment nut, (while the motor is running ) then just retighten it again, and it automatically adjusts the timing chain.
    Any of you that know please help

    Yes Its a 1998 Model

    I don't know if later models are different - but on early models at a fast idle you slacken off the adjuster and then retighten...on top of the left case behind the barrel inline with the chain,14mm with a 10mm on top from memory.

    All the 2 valve models are the same. That method usually works, but can be a bit expensive when it doesn't...

    Is it the same for a DR250 (SOHC 1993)? The nut on the back of my cylinder looks a little different to normal.

    I have used that method on some bikes (idle speed), and have seen that some are supposed to be set statically, without the engine running but set at Top Dead Centre when the chain is slackest.

    hello rocket man....how did you get on with tightening the timing chain ? heres a couple of pointers....it is correct to loosen off the 14mm lock nut and if everything is working ok the auto tensioner will take up.....however if the timing chain starts rattling worse you will have to try the manual aproach....screw right out the 10mm stud and approx 25mm down inside is a small hole taped out with a fine 3mm thread ....when you have found the correct screw/bolt,screw it into this hole and while pulling on it (gently with pliers) loosen the 14mm lock nut, the screw will come up and if there is much adjustment left your motor will be quiet again .
    Dont forget to adjust your timing after tensioning the timing chain (take off the CDI cover and advance it a fraction ).....good luck Shane

    I used to use a thin screwdriver.Trouble is at that point the chain starts slapping the barrel...I've seen them wear right through.
