    Budget.
Bikes don't sell enough to warrant TVCs, cos there isn't enough people to buy them here, so they say. At work, we've been trying to get Honda to do TV along with the press and web stuff we've been doing, but (Honda being the biggest according to stats in NZ), they can't see much point. In fact, the budget they've set is a bit lame imo. But what can you do?

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.

But of course there will be heaps and heaps of farm bikes too.

    Made me weep with longing.

I believe I read some where that during the early 90's when motorbikes really started to pick up in the power department there were a lot of accidents in Europe and public opposition turned against bikes. Apparently motorcycles decided against any not promote bikes in a highly public manner to avoid further restrictions.

I get the feeling that putting ads on tv glorifying motorbikes that completely disregard the speed laws is not in our best interests. What else is a bike that can go 150 in first good for ? How else do you advertise a 600cc+ sportsbike ?

Ads are expensive to make, even the cheap warehouse style ads will cost up to 10K each!

Car commercials can have budgets of upwards of $500,000 GREENBACKS, especially for the big boys like BMW and Audi.

Car commercials are almost always shot on 35mm film which is about $500 a roll, on average a car commercial will shot 20 - 40 rolls. This gives you some idea of where the money can go.

In general bikes are cheap(in comparison to cars) - therefore profits are slim, so basically bikes don't generate enough money to warrant big commercials, and cheap commercials generally are crap.

It should not be a surprise that Harley Davidson make the most TV commercials, as they are one of the bike marques that make the biggest profits per unit.

In general each marque will have a brand commercial, a general commercial that reflects the marques brand and image, these are generally shown on commercial sports channels.

Another reason, is any self respecting biker will never buy a bike on the back of a TV commercial, no matter how good it is, and these guys know this.

Its one of the reasons why the bike press is so important to the industry, as our bike buying decisions are heavily influenced by print publications.

Lastly this is not solely a NZ thing, in general bike commercials worldwide are an uncommon sight on primetime TV.

I recon we are the advertisement. How many of us started riding because a parrent did or because we saw a biker ride past the family car when we were kids?
Or even saw a GP racer pull a wheelie out of a corner during a race and thought, "I want to do that!"
Or perhaps a movie like Easy Rider.

Who needs tv spot with that kind of advertising.

That is why it up to each of us to be a good ambassador for our chosen passion.

At least a 1/3 of the non bikers I talk to hate us or fear us because of one bad experience they had.
