Getting a Quad bike VINned for road use?

A workmate is considering getting a racing quad and using it on the road.

I've not heard of this done, and can't find anything that says its strictly illegal. However, it would have to be VINned.

Does anyone know any more info about this, or where he can look?
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

I have heard of similar argument regarding quads on beaches, (apparently legal roads as such) all vehicles need to be regd/ wof etc. You could check out this avenue for him....

yes can be done...has been done.....bigest problem to over come is the lack of a differential.... kawasaki produce a few quads with rear differentials running from a sharft drive....he might want to look at them...other wise...good luck..

They do it quite often in the uk apparently, so maybe searching some .co.uk sites could be more helpful? Saw one on a crash test, the rider got 'destroyed'. Nasty.

Tell him to go to a low volume vehicle certifier, they will have all the answers.

You can do it, the thing just needs to have all the normal things, like indicators, etc, and you need to get it Wof'd and reg'd for the road.

Spent some time in France (Provence) last month and saw a few riders (on separate occasions) on ATVs who were obviously touring. The ATVs we saw were pretty big mothers and looked very purposeful.

Sounds like everyone else here has summed up what you can do with one, only thing i have to say is that he should check out the bike itself, i know alot of offroad 2wheel bikes used to have 'not for highway use' stamped on the frame. Not sure if it still happens on late model ones but just so you know there's a chance...

Fifth Gear (another Top Gear style show) had a story on these the other night. Tom didn't think they were that good of an idea. Was the handling that he didn't like. A lot of transfering weight from side to side needed in order to keep from ending up on two wheels through the corners...
Anyway the Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI is the one that they used so guess it likely that it would be compliant for our roads.

    my 2 cents...

Rubbish a handful of throttle and step the back end out keeps the weight transfer down....... bit easier on grass and cow shit though...
