BIKE Magazine says words to the effect, "Hard and focussed, if you're not leave it alone."

I'd like one but I'd need a commuter/tourer as well so it won't happen.

Welcome to the site. My choice out of the 2 would be VTR, but I'm more into the tourer mode when riding, so think apart from the small tank (but hey you wouldn't be crossing the Gobi Desert, we do have gas stations pretty close to each other here) feel it would be the better alrounder. And I dont recollect seeing a bad roadtest on them yet.

What do you plan on doing with it? Ride it to work, touring, scratching, track days?

The SV1000 at around $12500 has got to be worth a look ?

As a tourer the TLS is fine, but if you want to get it up to spec it will cost around $2000 in suspension add on's ( I don't know what the SV or VTR would need)
As said test rides to get a feel for the engines and ergonomic's is the best bet,you will know fairly quickly.
As far as power i seem to remember a comparison that said the 916/VTR/TLS were fairly even to 60 mph (UK test) then the TL walked away.It has to be remembered also given fairly high second hand prices these bikes are getting up to 9 years old now.... The SV has a lot of improvements to the engine and is also tuned (They are getting up to 140 RWHP in the UK) for a more friendly power delivery. (and it is new)

The SP1/2 will get spanked by a TLR in a straight line but handle better...... Even a detuned 1998 + TLS will jump to around 116 RWHP with a full system which is in the SP range.A 97 TLS will spank it no problems...not to mention a better power/torqu delivery.
It all comes back to what you are looking for.

Both great Bikes , Which one do you like the best? the wild boy TLS or captain sensible the VTR ?
Ride both decide then what suits you best. If you can get a good sorted TL with after market rear suspension its worth looking at . Then the SV is excellent value at the moment , not a lot extra for a brand new bike.

My 2000 VTR suits me fine, the Yoshi`s play a sweet tune too.
Anything where you can open the throttle and pull away at 200 k is fine by me.
But then I ain`t no "Ghost Rider"...

I just wrote my 99 VTR1000F off, i must say that i wanted it to be more than i wanted, but its only a 1000 twin. Very nice to ride with good handling. Suspention neds to be tuned to the rider. BUT the fuel economy is REALLY SHIT. Small tank (12L) didnt help. Wish i had the model with the 19L tank instead. I was always stopping to fill the damn thing at 170km down the tarmac. But then i was pushing everything out of it.

Nice bike overall. Easy to ride for anyone.

My old SP-1 had 117 RWHP standard, up to 127 RWHP after PCIIIr, Neptune Pipes and a K&N Filter.

If only they made them 150kg instead of 200kg's, I would probably have stuck with it.

If those are the only 2 bikes you're lookin at, get the VTR, no contest..... but if you go for the TL check out the rear shock mount, most of them break.

I've got an SV so I'm biased.

All VTR owners and ex owners luv their bikes and all TL owners and ex owners luv their bikes - prolly says enough.

I'm a zook fan from way back and tested the VTR b4 buying an SV. I didnt test a TLs.
