Get out and practice. Take what you read and pick up from group rides, think about it when it's raining, then do it when it's not.
Go at your own pace. I bought my bike at TSS too (fergus good bugger) and my first ride (other than many short test rides) was over the takas back to Masterton. Took my time, kept my eyes wide open, slowed down BEFORE every corner and putted home. Wasn't very fast, but had a blast
