    Very amateur painting...

To start with I am not a painter.

    ok that said. 2 pics.

Meanie is living up to his name and thinks it looks worse in red than it did in black.

Opinions welcome although at the end of the day I have already done it so tough.

Before and after. (the black is obviously before, red is after. I selected the upload in the wrong order)

Keeping in mind that the bike did need painting. Even if I stayed with black I would have had to repaint it cause the paint was buggered.

I'd go for the black myself, looks quite smart.

When I looked at the photos before reading your post properly, I thought you'd painted it black.
The red looks like a stock bike.
The black looks like someone's had a go at it with a spray can, it doesn't look as glossy as the new paint job. It's a bit too much black.

I think it looks better in red.

Red ones go faster! And...red just happens to be favourite colour So did you use a compressed air sprayer? Just interested in the details (once a modeller, always a modeller!)

I have no idea (apart from common sense) how to paint a bike and have a surplus of people who like to tell me I have no idea how to paint a bike without actually telling me how to paint a bike. (you know the type). Fortunately a few helpful tips made it come out a bit better than it might have.

step 1. sand the crap out of it with 240 grit paper
step 2. sand with 600 grit wet and dry.
step 3 prime with grey primer aerosol can ($10.50) x2
step 4. sand with 600 grit wet and dry.
step 5. spray with aerosol colonail red ($11) x3
step 6. leave overnight to dry
step 7. decide dont like the colour
step 8 goto bunnings and buy bright red ($4.70) and metalic red ($8)
step 9 sand with 600 grit wet and dry paper
step 10. repaint main fairings in red.
step 11. paint tank in metalic red
step 12. run out of metalic red paint.
    step 13..leave to dry
step 14. put all back together and decide to recoat next week
step 15. take it to work
step 16. Dont put sidestand down properly and watch fall to the ground.
step 17. good thing I was going to recoat it next weekend anyway

I need 2 more coats and a heap on the tank I think. I would like the tank to come up more sparkly. and then I will clear over the top.

Under $100 so far and a shitload of hours spent sanding. I am happy with result so far. Just a couple of glitches in the paintwork which hopefully I will get out next weekend.

tip. I painted it outside on the grass on a cover and the wind picked up. I think this was a stuffup really. need more sheltered conditions cause I think I wasted alot of the metalic red with trying to get thin coats and the wind making the paint miss the tank all together.

    Good first effort cowboyz!

Make sure you wipe down well after sanding - any remaining sanding 'dust' will stop the next coat from sticking properly.

When the top coat is on leave it a week or two then go over any rough patches with 1200 wet'n'dry CAREFULLY (especially near edges, on 'ridges')then get some rubbing compound and use that all over CAREFULLY, give it heaps with Turtlewax or similar and it'll look a million dollars. (make sure you wash it down between the above stages).

Looks pretty good Lance. The red does look more like stock but it still looks pretty good.

If you want to change colours again you could always try yellow

I was thinking of yellow but didn't want you on my doorstep trying to buy it. I know you wouldn't be able to resist
