Mate, I had exactly the same dilemma about 6 months ago! I ended up going for the SV as I could get a new one (albeit a US spec.) for just a grand dearer than the Hyosung. I knew that the SV was a good little bike and very popular whereas the GT was new. Like you I simply could not find a second hand SV very easily, and what I did see was nearly as expensive as the brand spanking one!

It sounds as though the GT is a great little bike. I've read the mag reviews and it sounds like it did impress pretty much everyone who rode it (including Cathcart) apart from some minor things. The engine in particular sounds like a little beauty. Can't be that bad if Dan Fisher chose it for his fancy new sportsbike...have a look

I'm itching to have a blat on a GT to see what they're like. For the money it sounds like a winner.

If you saw the TV coverage on Sky from the Nationals at Ruapuna, you would see one being raced! Geoff Cain down here is racing one in F3. I think its faster than his old 1982 VF400F (the very first one)

Gunner bought the SV650 in the end but I don't think he's told us much about that on here.

GT650S reviewed in latest Motorcycle Trader Mag, Issue 170. Not sure if you get it there. Only Aus$4.50. Good mag for the price.
They reckon it's good value, performance and handling, but lacks in the finish department. Costs about $9,500 on the road here.

Nothing beats a brand new bike so I guess Im just going have to think really hard about this one.

What do you guys think about the Suzuki GS1200, That is a budget bike from Suzuki, 1200cc at $9999?. Is it a piece of crap or just well priced??
Not going to buy one but interested to see if its a "get what you pay for" bike, cos cheap doesnt always mean bad.

Ok, was talking to a guy at TSS (wgtn) yesterday and he said you can buy the fully faired version (650R) and take the fairings off and buy a couple of extra semi-faired bits that turn it into a semi faired bike for (I think) $89 each side. You still have the full faired bits for re-sale. Also I believe he said that the 650S (semi-faired model) isnt being sold in NZ. Could change in the future of course.

Nobody has mentioned the 650R in this thread yet (have in other threads). Its a fantastic looking bike (http://www.hyosungmotors.com.au) and my workmate has just bought one. Ill try and get a review out of him. admittedly its $9995 and not below $9000 as you specified.

    gt650r vs sv650

The nice people at TSS in Wellington were good enough to let me try a '99 SV650 against a demo GT650R, big thumbs up to Fergus at this point(apparentely the GT650S won't be coming to our shores, but if you look at the specs, it has a longer trail and rake anyway).

Okay, let me get the gripes out of the way first. Build quality on the SV was much better. The Hyosung had a "kit bike" feel about it. The speedo was almost unreadable during the day, and the mirrors were hopeless. The Suzuki felt like someone had actually taken some time to detail (not bad on a bike that was already 7 years old). Surprinsingly, everyone has mentioned the front brakes as being naff on the GT, but I didn't find them bad. That said, there was an odd sound coming from them......

Now the good news, while the GT did feel a little "twitchy" in the front end, it wasn't really that bad, and, if anything felt very flickable, moreso than the SV. The GT definitely had way more mid range than the SV, but may be in due part to the fitting of an aftermarket can. It sure as hell was a lot louder, and, well, sorry officer, the devil made me do it, K? Okay, the SV felt very stable at high speed, and is very sensible, but the GT, just, well it just made you want to do something dumb!!!

Me personally? I would go for the Hyosung (and I am probably about to do so in the next few weeks). Okay, it will probably have nil resale value, your friends will laugh at you because "Hyosung" somehow sounds like "Toyota", or "Fried cat" (and better yet, "what the hell is a "Hyosung", a chinese kitchen blender?), but if you can live with that, I think you will enjoy riding it. Hey, who cares? It looks the part!! Sure, it crashes, bangs and thumps around in the mill dept in the same way the silky smooth SV doesn't, but I hate to say this, as I know I am bound to offend someone out there, but I found the SV totally bland. Actually, it was extremely bland. The GT on the other hand, reminded me why I like motorcycles so much. Lots of noise, vibration, basically sensory overload. Don't get me wrong here, the SV is a very sensible choice, but so is driving a Volvo to work.

Actually, probably the most telling factor I have noticed is the number of them on the road here in Wellington (well the 250's anyway). So I guess they can't be that bad!

My suggestion? Take both of them out to compare, and see where you go from there.

however, don't expect the same mild-mannered characteristics, expectations are that it will be a bit of a wild thing and a true superbike.
