That's mental aye. Ever heard of a roundabout or traffic lights?! I love the amount of beeping too, like who exactly are you beeping at, who exactly has the right of way. lol

No Cops, no traffic lights, Give way or Stop signs, and yet the traffic flows pretty bloody well.

They have law, it's just not enforced so much. We are getting like that here, if Aucklands red light running is anything to go by! Brad Pitt is riding a motorbike whilst in India, I saw a photo of him in a magazine. He is wearing a 'helmet'. (open face, looks like it's been shot by a shotgun)

I went to India years ago, there are so many millions of people they just deal with the crowds, and mostly it does go smoothly. Miraculously it seems to us foreigners.

It's not magic, it's completely normal.

You guys remember that big powercut Auckland had a few months ago where all the traffic lights went out??

Remember that traffic actually flowed smoother?

It's the same there. Everybody is courteous, there is almost zero road rage.

There is only one rule drivers/riders generally follow:
Maintain a reasonable amount of free space around your vehicle. - THAT'S IT.

Yeah good point, people deal with stuff when they need to eh. Our esteemed leaders try to legislate everything to make it go smoothly and all that happens is people get lazy and lose the ability to think for themselves. Like, how many 'uncontrolled intersections' are there anymore? As a result, on the rare occasions people encounter one, they hardly know who is supposed to give way.

I've seen traffic like this in Bali and Thailand, its utterly chaotic, but very few accidents.

It seems to work because people don't tend to travel that fast - up to 40kph, and will come off the gas at the first sign of someone approaching, or a blind corner.

Its actually pretty damm funny to compare to drivers here, who expect to be able to do 50kph everywhere, and don't expect the unexpected, whereas the driving I observed was more along the lines of expecting to have someone pull out infront of you, and not being at a speed that you can't do something about it.

Bali was pretty funny, car A would be passing car B. Car A toots on horn once, and if Car B reckons that car A can pass, toots back, pulls over a bit, and slows down. Worked most of the time, but had quite a few apparent near misses that actually weren't as because by the time there were three cars trying to occupy the two lanes, everyone had slowed down, and was doing 15 to 20kph, it became trivial to pass.

After we flew back into Auckland in July, I was quite disturbed by just how tunnel vision the drivers were, and how fast they went, and the differences in speed between cars going in the same direction.

Funny how ones perception changes when exposed to alternative behaviour in essentially the same environment. Not dissimilar to getting back on my bike after riding my mates SV1000 for a few KM, actually.

I'm with you on that one. A few places in europe are trying the concept of removing all roundabouts and signals and turing everything back to uncontrolled intersections. They are hoping to get back the village feel of the "olden" days where speeds were lower and the place was more cyclist and pedestrian frendly.

Couldnt do a whole city of it here but could do "cells" i.e. residential areas of it. Would be really interesting to talk a council into a trial.
