What year KX250 do I have...

    Hi,

Purchased a KX250 and the guy he purchased it off said it was a '94, but when he went into the shop to get something fix he got told it was a '98 so I got told when I bought it its either a 94 or a 98.

does anyone know the difference between the bikes?

I've checked out some pics...but those years look almost the same so can't really tell for sure. I'll try and put some pics up tonight.

Also...if anyone has the alternator for this bike, please sell me it!!! its currently dead and I need to replace it.

Get the number off the engine case and call your local kawa dealer. sometimes people will change an engine and put it in there old frame.

i can tell you if you foward me the chassis number, however their is a few tricks to know, if it has a elecrical fitting on the carb it is a 98, check that, you can get the stator rewound which is much cheaper than a new one

Easy option on most bikes is the rims & brake lines have date codes on them if you look hard enough.

    Thank you,- brilliant I know.

Thanks mate, I'll have a look tonight and see if I can see any dates.

Just rang the guy...might take it else where...he was getting rather confused when I said the alternator needs to be rewound, there's only 0.6v coming out, the what he said? the thing that generates the power inside the engine so there is power gonig to the spark plug so the engine will run...umm, a dynamo? generator?...nope don't know what you are getting at he said...ok, thanks for your time.

Dunno...maybe I got someone that wasn't meant to answer the phone or something.

Thinking I'll just take it down to henderson motorcycles, they've always been really good to me.

hes is a bit hard to deal with a times, more than likely Henderson Motorcycles will send the stator to him anyway, not many dealers rewqind thier own stators

Most odd, he has been quite lucid whenever I have spoken to him, but often oddball trades people are quirky, comes from the patience to sit in front of a machine winding thin wire without breaking it.

Also they are charge coils, not alternator coils. Alternator coils are what roadbikes have to charge the battery. Charge coils & pulsar coils are what CDIs require. Hence the confusion.
Also people often call 4 stroke ignitions CDIs they are not.

So terminology is often confusing if someone is using the wrong or different words. And I've used other winders. He is the one which seems to end up with most reliable end product. Had feedback from bike shops of this too.

hmmm, perhaps I'll give it another go tomorrow...I'm half asleep here at work so probably confused the poor guy by speaking the wrong terminology.

2 more hours then I'm off to

Hmmmm...think I got screwed...just checked, its a KX250H-XXXX which seems to mean a 90-91 from the google search (why didn't I think of that earlier!!!)

Oh well, can't expect much for $600.
