Um, does the 'clattering' sound like the 'clattering' of the other engine??

Nah, this was the piston getting pushed down with a spark, but then the starter catching up as it decelerated and clunking.

I was keeping my thumb on the button to keep it turning over and get some oil through the system.

Cracked the top oil banjo and there was definitely pressure there so that was sweet.

Bursts of starter motor and it sounds a lot better. When it finally ran, it sounded fine.

On the rare occasion im going a short distance, eg ride to work or testing station up road etc I go sans earplugs. This is always a hideous experience especially on the GSXR hearing engine noise you don't normally hear!

    Old engine runs quite nicely.
The chain is getting tight links though. It's only 3,000km old. The last one went 15,000 km.

It'll be interesting to see how many km I get from a tank with the stock(ish) carb vs the pumper.

The pumper did need an overhaul though. The bleed valve wasn't working and the throttle cables were badly mounted.

Now it's getting colder, I need to find where my extended choke knob is. The BST carb hasn't been on the bike for years and somehow it got a short choke knob installed.

OK. About 16km/l from the dodgy FCR. Just got 19km/l from a worked BST that's been on the shelf for nearly 6 years.

Jeez, really? KLX400 does about 25k/litre with FCR39

When it was first installed, the FCR39 was getting 19km/l easily.
Much better bottom and mid range too.

I get 21.5 klm/l from my FCR on the 530. Its the best mileage I've had from any of my KTM's and the previous 2 were both FI. Go the mighty FCR! (cept for sorting jetting to eliminate popping on decal that is.- yes I have checked the exhaust for leaks)

Some of the FCR's didn't have the circuitry to stop the popping on decel.

Had 3 FCR bikes so far,,

Never had to make anything but trivial adjustments and been amazed how well the carbs work.
smooth, sweet idle, never bogged gassing them and never had decel pop, just a nice drone (like truck brakes.)

The DR had to be crash started twice today (only worked in 4th gear).
It may have been the battery, as I very nearly flattened it when doing the transplant. The headlight was going, but not a sausage from the starter. Wasn't the normal DR starter issue either.

Once I got it going, the starter tried a little and when I got home after a 12min run, it started it 3 times no problem.
Just had it on charge for 5hrs. Will check it out tomorrow.

That's mostly because of the exhaust. It's an FMF + GSXR muffler. Usually the only time that it back fires is when I give it a good fist full of throttle and then back off really quickly.

The carb is also an FCR39.
