They are a heavy bike so it's hard on the drive chain, that is UJ's (I found out) diff's and older 5 speed gear boxers as they were of a 1976-ish design and those bike did not make as much power as the more (notice I say more) modern bikes do.
That's why maybe D had problems with his gearbox.
Some Guy's with older less power full SP 1000's have only replaced their UJ only once in the life time of their bike's.
Where Guy's on the MKIV's and MKV's get about (a guess) 30-40,000 K's.
That would be one of the reasons they updated the drive line, to take the extra power.
As for the oil pick up I can not help as I have not seen anyone do long enough wheelie to cause a problem.
They have a large sump and carry 3 1/5 to 4 litres of oil so I think that it would not be a problem.
I'm speaking mainly about the old type motor.
Remember that there is a dry clutch in the middle and the gear box oil is separate from the motor oil, but if you hold it vertical for long enough you would.
But you do ride up some steep hills for awhile with no problems, I would worry more about the dive train than the oil pick up.
