Talking OyMyGoodness I just bought a Volty!

I just bought a Volty off TradeMe. Wow! My first bike! I'm so excited!

So what do you reckon about Voltys then? What can I expect from the old girl? She's a 1995 model and a bit tired looking but basically mechanically sound (Mack the Knife and Dave C both test rode her for me, Heavenly Talker gave me moral support and good advice.)

I also got my Basic Handling Cert on Sunday and aim to do my learner's theory later this week. I'll be on the road in no time! Woohoo! Watch out world, here I come!

They are a GN250 in disguise. The difference is cosmetic, tank, seat, and headlight.
Volty's have the GN250 engine and gearbox, so parts are widespread, and it's got an almost identical frame too.
    They're good for learning.
Good choice. Better looking than a GN but just as good for learning and not dying.

Congrats and welcome to the world of bikes

Nice looking retro bike, the GNs have had a good run from that time frame, the new chinese models seem to have been troublesome but you should be fine with the older model

Well done klingon, welcome to the world of being charge of the fun and not clinging on anymore! (well I suppose that depends on how you ride!?) Have fun out there and be safe.

    Thanks everyone!

I brought it home tonight (well Dave C brought it home for me and I followed - just to make sure he didn't try to steal it!) The first thing I did was polish it. I wonder how many people have bought a bike even when it's brand new and the first thing they do is wash and polish it.

I felt like a right bogan out there in the garage with a beer and a polishing cloth.

    It needs
    1) new mirrors (the old ones are so loose they're floppy)
    2) new chain and sprockets
    3) oil in the forks

Then it'll be just like brand new

I've already learned a lot from going on group rides as a pillion. It will be a while before I get out there amongst it though. First I have to get my learner's, then get the bike in decent working order. Also the only time I've ever 'ridden' is during the basic handling session so I've never been more than about 20 kph and a total of 2 kms around in circles!

So before I do any road riding I'll go round and round an empty car park a few times, up and down a dead-end street, then on the road at 7am on a Sunday when there's no one else there!

So watch out for the Volty with the L-is-for-Loony plate! Give me a wave but only expect a wobble in return!

    Good Stuff,
where in Auckland are you? When you get your learners and have the basics down come and join us on a learner 250 ride,

Hi Maverick, what and where are the learner 250 rides? And how do you avoid 20-bike pileups?!
I'm in Mt Albert by the way
