    The two twins

    Hey guys,

In feb I can get and will get my full licence.

Due to budget constraints I have gone from wanting the zx10r to the sv650 or sv1000. I have only heard awesomeness about the sv650 with only the susspension being less than ok, but I often hear people not liking the sv1000, so at this stage i'm thinking sv650.

Is this just nuts? Would I, after a few weeks be saying "Why oh why didnt I get the 1000?"

Im not a sports biker in the sence I want to own the fastest bike in the world and go that speed on the way to the dairy. I like to go fast, but not that fast and I think the sv650 should be fast enough for me.

On another note, I see conflicting stories about the performance of the sv650, one guy reckons it can get to 0-100 in 3.9 seconds is that right? How would the performance compare to a 1986 gpz 1000rx (125hp.... 98bhp 260kg DRY)

Please dont confuse me any more about other bikes, Im getting an SV just gotta narrow it down to 650 or 1000.

It looks to me that on the 2nd hand market the 650 and 1000 are about the same price? Can somone give me a good current market price on the 650 and 1000? Is anyone selling any atm? I have about 7g for a 650 but would be willing to get a loan if the 1000 is the better bike (not in terms of speed....)

Oh and one last thing, how easy is it to wheele the sv650?
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

They're both good bikes. Buying bikes is too personal, you'll need to wait till Feb and ride them both. Any bike will wheelie if you're brutal enough, but by most accounts, the 650 wheelies good.

i've seen a particular SV650 doing some pretty mingin' wheelies.

Just get the 650 bro, it'll still get you out to 200+ clicks, probably has more torque than your GPZ, and with an open pipe it'll sound pretty damn sweet too!

The 1000 might be an overkill, but i have ridden a VTR1000 and found it quite nice for the riding I was doing at the time.

    The power specs are

    Gpz1000rx 1986

    125 hp claimed about 100bhp
    about 99nm of torque
    weight 260 dry

    2000 sv650

    claimed 70hp
    Claimed 62nm of torque
    weight 165 dry
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot

Lets get this straight. Twins don't produce more torque than any other engine format. Torque is a function of capacity, revs, and to a lesser extent intake volume. How an engine produces torque differs from layout to layout, and twins tend to have an early torque peak with a very flat curve.

Yep, a GSXR1000 has a whole heap more torque than an SV1000, down low too.

I have a friend who owns an SV650. They are nothing to laugh at in the twisties but the open road is where it runs out of puff - and quickly too. 210 - 220kph is all he will get out of his...

The SV1000 may not be as easy to swing from side to side but it wont be far behind, but you wont have to tapdance on the gearshift all the time like our friend has to. The 1000 will be inifinitely easier to ride around in top gear and through the twisties this is a blessing. I have a VTR1000 and this is about the equivalent to the SV1000. I have to say it is a very easy bike to "ride" through hills and overtaking slower traffic is bliss. The SV1000 will be the same... The 650 has to chop down a couple of gears to do the same thing.

Basically the SV1000 will do everything the SV650 will, but the SV650 will not do everything the SV1000 will. You just have to pay a few more bucks for the 1000...

    Your choice...

    Gidday,

It also comes down to your physical size - I'm a bit short for my weight (if you get what I mean) and the 650's I have owned have grown 'dull' in there performance after a fairly short time, having said that, I never owned a SV650.

Simply put - I love the performance of the SV1000, yes you can ride the torque more than a 650, but it isn't really happy pulling full throttle hard untill over 4000rpm (the K5 has a lighter crankshaft than the earlier models), but that still gives 7000rpm of good times which never fails to put a smile on my face, and it will putter around at lower revs if you want it to.

Yes the 1000 weighs more but ay 186kg it is still much lighter than a lot of other older 1000's, and if you want a really quick handling - just fit motard bars like I did to mine and you will end up with a sports tourer with a streetfighter personallity, and believe me - I have never had a bike that handles as quick as this one.

    Cheers

Cool, this is sort of the feedback I was wanting.

How is the sv1000 on tires and gas? My current bike gets 10km/L and tires every 5000km (prelli sport demons every 3000 :O ). (And I do NOT ride hard!!)

    Gidday,

I get between 170 and 240 km/tank depending on how hard I'm riding.

I have just replaced the original front tyre at 14,000km and the rears seem to last about 8000km (before sqauring off too much), however the scotsman in me always wants to get the last km that I can from a tyre.

Am currently on Pilot Powers and have no complaints.

Most of my riding is sport touring.

    Cheers

You could always go for the 650, ride it for 6 months, then sell and upgrade, you would hopefully not lose too much on the deal but you would gain all the experience and wisdom from owning the 650 twin before its bigger brother. Just a thought.
    p.s. "Its a curse I cannot shake responsibility" . . . . great song!

I rode my mates SV1000 for a few km, and while the torque is something to drool over, its got a bit of an odd seating position, like you are really far towards the front of the bike. I'm 6'1", so ymmv.

That said, I'd have to say that riding it is a bit like riding a bmx with a rocket attached to your ass. Fecking fabulous Gotta try a GSXR1000, evidently they are a step up from his in speed and torque again

I had a sv650 new shape for a loaner while my 7 was in for a service... ok, so I wasn't a nana... but it was shit.

Front suspension was horrible (think a wet sponge) and found it... gutless. Just my feeling of one. But it was light on its feet for splitting, and not quite as linear as my 7. FI made it easy off the line around town, but shite, the seat was very uncomfortable.

compared to the 1000 thingie... sorry, don't know about it, no idea how it compares.
