I'd just like to clarify that I don't see male circumcision as in any way equivalent to female 'circumcision'; I only used the phrase 'barbaric' as hyperbole.

There isn't anything particularly nasty about circumcision of the penis, and in some situations, as commented on above, it can have advantages in terms of reducing health risks. In an enlightened society with plenty of soap, however, I consider it pointless.

Female genital mutilation, on the other hand, is a horrible crime.
