Yes, if you're going towards it you don't need to slow down.

BUT think about this (my humble $0.02). The camera will still take a photo of a bike that is speeding towards it. The camera can't figure out that it's a bike without a front numberplate.

If heaps of riders don't slow down (or if they deliberately speed up because they know they can't get ticketed) then the powers that be may well make us have front numberplates. Some guys I know go at warp factor going towards them because they think it's funny because they know they can't be ticketed.

If I see a mobile or know I'm going past a fixed camera, I always slow to (very close to) the speed limit, regardless of front or rear facing. (I sometimes don't see speed cameras, but that's another story!)

Be aware that there have been odd mutterings fairly recently by the powers that be about bringing back front numberplates, and we don't want to give them more ammo against us. They've been talking in Oz (Victoria I think?) about bringing back front numberplates, and we often tend to follow Oz trends in these matters.

I don't mean this post to sound "holier than thou", so I hope no-one reads it as such.

Here endeth the lesson. I'm going to jump in the shower before heading north to Pukekohe.

Does anyone know how long they have to keep the images taken by speed cameras?

dunno. best guess would be no longer than past the 28 day appeal after sentence date entered. they are all taken on rolls of film (no digital) so there would be an issue with storage space. they may convert them to digital once the fine is paid and the 28 day thing has passed. i'm not really sure. i think there is someone in here that works in the PIB - they'll know

i've heard that overseas they are gettin even better cameras which run on two sets of strips in the road. How this works is, you go over the first strip theres nothing to give any indication of a camera, it then starts a counter that counts out the time you take to the second strip if this time is too short your bugger even if you slow down.

Now i have only heard this and still cant figure out how it works wit multiple vehicles going over the first while only one will get to the second in that time??

And wit NZ cameras the fixed cameras no which lane is speeding so multiple vehicles in a pic wont get you off a ticket, the mobile cameras cant have two vehicles in the pic as they dont no how did it.

Are you sure they are film, not digital? I ask because every photo I have ever seen (people have them pinned up at work as trophies) including the one I got have been printed by an inkjet printer on plain paper. So they are digitised at some stage. The biggest film container I have ever seen for a conventional 35mm camera has been a 250 shot one. Some of the speed cams would need reloading every other day if that was the case. I was told the cams are connected to laptops (IBM stinkpads) and I thought that was the storage for the pics
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

the pic i got wasnt printed on plain paper it was on actual photo paper probably the first print they got. Must be digitised after that

Yes Lynda, I know we have discussed this before, I agree 100%, , IMHO the bird, monos, etc are all antagonistic (sp? Help me Hitcher)towards the Gummit camera/law makers, I too can see the possibilty of ugly front number plates coming, worth thinking about !

    my own fault really.

Yup, that's correct spelling of "antagonistic", same with "Gummint" (although "Gubmint" is also permissible), but you've spelted "possibility" wrongly.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

These are alive and kicking in the UK. I think they take a photo of every vehicle passing a point and they have another camera futher along that does the same. The 2 images are matched by number plate and the time between them compared. If the time is too short (i.e. speeding) you get a ticket. They have this setup in the Limehouse Link tunnel which I use quite often. Very effective in slowing down traffic - but only if you know about it.

We are seeing a new range of fixed position digital cameras introduced over here in England. And some of them are downright scary in how they can 'get' you.

They are test-running a set of digital cameras in a 1.8 mile tunnel I use sometimes. 3 cameras in place - one at each and and one in the middle.

They can pick up on entry speed at each point - and also work out the average speed through the tunnel (not sure if they can work it between all three cameras or just the two).

Final scary bit? Being digital, they dont' need film. So they work 24/7. And I understand they are linked into a control centre a few miles away. Which is linked into the numberplate database. And so they can send out prosecution notices without anyone needing to be involved.

Oddly enough, it is a 30mph speed limit in that tunnel. Everyone drives/rides at 29mph exactly...
