    Stupid is as stupid does...

    narrow country road
tightish corner but good visibility ..... = no excuses

guy in front of me hit a patch of loose gravel, lost his rear end and went sailing off the side of the embankment

........ i remember thinking "that's nasty - must avoid that gravel" whilst watching in horrid fascination as he landed in an explosion of loose earth, gravel and scrub ..[it really was spectacular ] .....only to feel my own back end go and to follow him gracefully into the same ditch a moment later

how clever was that ... now my beautiful bike's bent and i'm too embarrassed to look her in the headlights ..........

remember Kiddies - it's true that your bike is likely to go where your eyes are focused ---
pity i didn't remember that before i hit the gravel

    Lucky thing is you're ok!
    Could have been much worse...

I've hit a couple of nasty patches of gravel before while on a lean. So far I've been able to keep her upright, in my lane and ride out of it by doing fuck-all and just let the bike handle it.
Went through a nasty stretch of gravel (part of roadworks) between Rakaia Gorge and Methven yesterday - very very loose feeling. Handled it with the "do fuck-all" approach and just rode through.

How fast where you going? And how tight was the corner?

yeh more or less ------- but funny thing was, a coupla seconds after i followed the guy in front of me and left the road, the guy BEHIND me did the exact same thing, following ME ......

and, on the far side of the road was sprawled yet ANOTHER guy from some other club's ride that had binned on the same corner coming in the opposite direction........

in retrospect it was hilarious ......

Yeah, it seems someone has brought us a parrot that has read all of the survival skills forum.

That's by far the best option in sooooooo many situations. If the bike can't save itself then adding control inputs really isn't going to do much.

Ouch mstriumph! Sounds like a right bin-fest on that corner. Bloody gravel

    Bloody gravel
'Twas only a little bit........but effective!

Having been on many a KB run, , I saw through the trees, around the corner, that something was up, ahead, and had slowed by the time I reached the corner, in time to see the young guy on the FJ ahead of me vanish off the road, in a spray of sand and dust!!

A classic case of target fixation and braking hard in a corner when he didn't have to!

They were all lucky they hit the mound of sand, not the clumps of trees surrounding.........I thinks this corner has claimed more than it's fair share in the past......
