Thats good, You realise that roads always look totally different by daylight to what they look at night.
Yes, there are tunnels. A whole town in fact, chambers and rooms and so on. But the miserable buggers have blocked off the entrances now. Never saw anything interesting in them, the ones in North head were better.

So there we are waiting and we spot this biker on a green bike shoot throu the lights... I thought it couldnt be....... so we waited and waited....... I went for a wander and there was Gremlin waiting down in Newton Rd...
Yikes we have two that dont follow instructions that good.....
So we decided that Gremlin should lead the way as he knows the uni better than us two.....
So off we go and down Symonds St we tootle...
Gremlin showed DD where to park once we got over that gravel patch....
Then shows him the other place to park outside the Maidenment Theatre...
Off we wander........DD showing us the way.....via the written instructions..
Yes he almost got us LOST..... Read it properly young fella.
After all that we decided that DD should lead us out of the city back to the motorway.... he tells us which way..... and then at a set of lights as I say about continue up over K'Rd to upper Queen Street to Newton Rd... he changes his mind we are going another way.... Up Hobson Rd.....
So I assume he has made it home as I left him on his travels as I got off at Te Atatu.
So DD, on the 6th off ramp (Newton Rd) get off the nor western motorway..... up Newton Rd to Symonds set of lights. .... turn left in Symonds St....... to.................. next bit your on your own.... hehehehe.

Well, he should be well under way by now. I wonder where he'll end up. If he does get into that maze of tunnels under the park, we wil certainly never see him again.

That map (and account) just covers the little end bit.

shows the complete 1941 tunnel layout. But what is not always realised is that the 1941 tunnels are not the whole story, because the 1941 work incorporated a lot of excavation that they found, which dated to the days when the park was a barracks. There were 19th century underground bunkers, bombproof shelters , ammo stores , armouries etc. A lot of the underground stuff was incorporated in the 1941 work
Years ago, if you knew where the entrance was (before a lot of bloody Grundys had it sealed up) you could wander round quite happily in there , albeit with a little care .Of course, then it was not so very old, the old (19C) work was in quite good nick though.
Those may have been my beer bottles, it was a good place for a drinking session.
The ones at North head were better though.
