Twice in the last year I've been hit from behind while in my car (sorry for the non bike-related post).
Last time, two weeks ago, it was while I was second in line waiting at a red light. (In my freakin' two month old, new car).
Both times, it was a van that hit me.
Both times, I had zero damage - but left a tow-bar shaped hole in the vans' front plate.
Lessons:
They are all idiots, and they don't just want to hurt riders.
Get a tow bar.
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.
With me it was the car 2 back that didn't stop at the lights.

Ha, you would have thought so but I think I got away with that one. I knew I was going to get hit so locked my arms real hard to brace for impact which probably saved my nuts. The tyre mark and big dent on his bonnet combined with a broken fender was a real "shame", not!
Not sure if allowing space on the side for the car to go through is a good idea because getting side swiped would be worse than getting hit from behind. In this case it was a matter of receiving the lesser of 2 evils as the other option was to overrun the roundabout and rely on the oncoming car to stop and if it didn't I would have been in deep kaka and then it would have been my fault for not giving way at a roundabout.
Fortunately I am insured. The car driver wasn't.
I hate this thread ! Ive never worked out how to avoid being rear ended. just glad you and bike OK..ish
David must play fair with the other kids, even the idiots.
Glad you are ok.![]()
I'm with the guys who say dominate your space on the road. At least if you're in the middle of your lane, your bike will receive a lot of the impact not you.
After being rear-ended in the car, I always watch what's coming up behind me while I'm stopped. If I see a car coming, I'll pump my foot brake a couple of times and hope they see my tail light fire up!
Another thing to consider is how close you sit to the intersection. I don't sit on the lines because I've heard so many horror stories about vehicles being shunted into the line of oncoming traffic.
TOP QUOTE: “The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people’s money.”
Glad to hear you are ok.
You just can't trust those car idiots on the road eh?
Are you taking any prescription medication? [Rain Man]
Saw A LOT of asshole tailgating of bikes today while we were cruising in traffic. I mean real bad, literally centimetres from back wheel stuff. Mostly perpetrated by fuckwits in Commodores. What the hell is it with fuckwits in Commodores?
Driven by salesmen...need I say more?
That's why I never sit in traffic queues. Bikes are for lane splitting.
Speed doesn't kill people.
Stupidity kills people.
