After Wellington not wanting to offend other cultures by putting up
    Xmas
    lights.

After hearing that we are going to let a Muslim woman have her picture
on her drivers license with her face covered.

This prompted this editorial written by a New Zealand Citizen.
    Quote:

IMMIGRANTS, NOT NEW ZEALANDERS, MUST ADAPT. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT!

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some

individuals or their culture. I am not against immigration, nor do I
    hold
a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to New

    Zealand.

However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to
    our
country and apparently some born here, need to understand.

This idea of New Zealand being a multicultural community has served
    only
to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As New Zealanders,
    we
have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own

    lifestyle.

Our culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials
    and
victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom, even
    died
    for it.

We Speak ENGLISH or MAORI, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese,

Japanese, Russian or any other language. Therefore if you wish to
    become
part of New Zealand society, -- Learn the language!

"In God we trust "is our national Motto. This is not some Christian,
    right
wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and

women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is
    clearly
    documented.

It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools.
    If
God offends you, then it is recommended that you consider another part
    of
the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like "A FAIR GO", then
    you
should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we
    really
don't care how you did things where you came from, This is OUR COUNTRY,

OUR LAND, AND OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to

enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and or

griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our National Motto, or Our Way Of

Life, then you are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to take advantage of one other
    great
New Zealand freedom "THE RIGHT TO LEAVE"

LEAVE if you aren't happy here then f#@* off! We didn't force you to
    come
    here.

YOU asked to be here. So Accept the country YOU accepted, it's pretty
    easy
really, when you think about it

What pisses me off is that people come here to get away from a perceived 'problem' - and bring major features of that 'problem' to NZ with them!!!!

    Move here - blend in.

    We have a Pledge?

Gee, you'd think that folk so enthusiatic about OUR country would be able to defend it without plagiarising some other countries rant.

I think a few people here are getting religion and culture mixed up. Religion is religion and cant be adapted. Culture can be blended to a certian point, but whats wrong with people speaking their own language at home? I agree that it's rude to talk non-english in front of NZ'rs if it can be helped and practice does make perfect. Why are we all looking at the problems that immigration bring? How about our own problems sorted first? People, weather Muslim, black, yellow or Hindu should be treated as people on an indivudal basis as we do ourselves. Theirs bad bastards and stirers all over the world, and believe it or not theirs some in this country as well. Don't judge all of Islam from what some idiot in Ozzy is saying, thats only his view, not mine or every Muslim's view.

I agree...........if we let Muslims in then we have to respect their religion as we should not expect them to change their faith........but equally, they should respect our culture and laws as we would in their Country and how many of us criticise other cultures because they do not suit us?

A lot of people think that cutting off the hand of a thief is aweful, however, it is their culture and if you know the consequences of your actions then what is the problem.

The Driving Licence photo issue? Well I don't see a real problem.....the licence requires a signature so that is a form of identification. There is a way around the issue......isn't that the Kiwi way?

I remember in the UK a while ago when there was some Sikh saying that he could not wear a helmet when riding a motorbike because he had to wear his head wear..........what's the problem.........he won his case.

When I was in Kenya, the locals caught 2 thieves, doused them in petrol and set fire to them. Okay, not my way but those guys would have known the risks and did not respect the culture / way of life.

Like you say we have to treat people on an individual basis like we would anyone else. If a person acts improperly then we have a choice to cut ties with that person.......at the end of the day it is our choice to take offence or not to take offence.

    Get over it.

Points taken. But I know of a friend who lived and worked in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and she was required to wear the veils and scarves etc, even though she does not believe in their religion. She respected that and wore the veil accordingly, but why does this not work the other way around? Why, when requested (as seen recently in schools across France), do the women not take the veils off when in another country?

I see your point Grahameeboy regarding us critisising other cultures, but I am not in that respective country so I have no need to follow their customs and culture.

All I am saying is if you go to another country (whether it be NZ, Australia or North Korea) then you should be expected to follow that country's laws, customs, and requirements. Does this not seem fair?

You are correct in saying its our choice to take offence or otherwise...but when we do take offence nothing happens, as with the veils (and I am only using the veils as it is an example on the top of my head).

I think in a roundabout way we agree.

I do agree with you on the Saudi Arabia thing though with your friend......is it a cultural / custom thing over there, not purely religious? If so then in your final paragraph you agree with what happened to your friend.

This is all I could find about Business Dress in Saudi Arabia

Business women should make certain that their collarbones and knees are covered and that their clothes are not form-fitting.

Are you sure she had to wear a veil....obviously scarf would cover collarbones.
