Question about selling on TradeMe

I am currently selling my bike on TradeMe (83783052) and have had an auction question asking for the frame number and engine number of the bike.

What I want to ask kb members (who have used TM to sell or buy bikes) is there any risk in giving out that information as it specifically identifies my bike. From this - could there be the possibility of people finding out where the bike lives and (worst case scenario) theft? I am not saying that the person who is asking is a non-genuine potential buyer/bidder. I am thinking of other people who may read it on TM as there are literally hundreds of page views and watchers on the auction.

Any opinions/ advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

if you dont want to post up the details on trade me just post up your phone number, if they are a serious buyer they will call you to get relevant details.

I agree you are better to talk to the person direct and ask why they want the numbers, could be to check if it has been stolen or written off

I have sold bikes and cars on the net. Posted all the info. They can check all sorts of stuff from the rego. When I buy bikes and cars I want the info for a VIR check. I have never had a problem with it. Just my opinion.

Mind you I have some big guns..............................

i bought my bike out of trademe,simply by getting rego details and going to post shop to find where owner lived and looked up his/her name,i think post shop have closed that way to get info though,anyway saw relevant paperwork,went for ride and bought,funny thing was he/she had to go to his/her work and click buy now,gave themself great feedback to lol,am now authenticated with trademe now,i gave out my mobile only when required,not my email,agree if it's collectable etc never show rego in pictures,others out there have less scrupples,i.e the prick who stole the triumph,and the fucken bastard/s who torched oznamm house in palmy(cancer people stay for radiotherapy there),HOPE THEY GET CANCER THEN FIND THEY ARE FUCKED,i'd love to place the chemo needle in them,preferably through their JUGULAR oh yeah i.ve been there,survived so far,bring back the biff.

The meanstreaks are great eh just a little lacking in the ground clearance thou but hey you get used to it, i wont be selling mine for a long while

Some potential buyer may have wanted to know the precise model or year of manufacture (not of first reg) through the engine or frame number. I have done the same on a couple of bikes and found one that was 2 years older than advertised.
Just give them the number with the last 3 numbers missing. No way to trace you without a tremendous amount of guesswork that way.

Yep, Dadpoles right. A serious collector likes to check the numbers to make sure their getting an original not a mixture of various parts. And yes when buying a vehicle on the net I use the rego to check ownership,mileage, money owing, and even reassurance that the guy whose selling actually does have an address the same as the bike.

Good post there HeyJoe2,

I have bought and sold bikes on TradeMe. Yes if you do disclose private information sensibly (e.g. frame no's, number plate, phone no's ect.) then you are reducing the likelyhood of such an unwanted incident occuring, like your house being broken into or your bike stolen.

And for record people can't dig up your details from the first few digits of the frame no which does not include any figures of the VIN no, which is what one would really need when they have to research on the bike. VIN no yes there are chances of your private info bein mined.

But again if you take a second thought and think about it carefully, if someone did really want to steal your bike, break into your house, or worse harm you from your TradeMe auction it would be rather easy for them.

How and Why?

Well you only need one small info about someone these days to find out more than enough about them to stalk/harm them. E.g. Phone No: can easily lead to full name -> age, address and a whole list of information. No Plate: can lead you to full name -> from where you can get phone no, address ect .. ect .. with very little effort as outlined in earlier posts.

So in my opinion.

If someone does ask for info like that I would give it out over the net as there isn't much difference sticking your phone no or frame no on a TradeMe auction than giving it out over the phone, yes more would be able to view it but it somone was desparately after your private info then hey they would have it. But again your personal call, whatever you think would suit you

I generally find most people on TradeMe to be very honest and reliable.
