Yep! Aussie has a lot to offer, (apart from Wharfies ) like penalty rates for wages, ie. time and a half on Asaturdatys, as well as Double time on Sundays. BTW, did you hear that a pile of rocket launchers were stolen from the Aussie Army and sold to...well... no body knows. Only one has been recovered. Now you can see why there's a 'no PC" attitude here from the politicians. Of course, we don't have a woman as PM either.

I like the fact that I live in a country that is prepared to take major steps to address wrongs done in the past and that may include the poor fucks that got showered in the yanks dirty fuckin chemicals during the Vietnam war. We are a progressive country and other than all the PC bullshit that I hate, I'm proud to be a Kiwi over any other country that I know.[ Wipes tears from eyes and takes hand from over heart] There is a place for non PC too but that aussie speech was a bit strong I thought.

Some reassurance to the general [i.e moderate] Muslim population would have been in order IMO. Bunching all Muslims together with the nutty bunch is less than accurate.

In my experience the average Muslim within N.Z does not condone violence in any form. I have meet some good ones, in fact I have yet to meet one I dislike. The politicians within Oz are not helping matters with vote grabing red neck comments, and while they may have a point, there collective ability to manage radicals and educate the general populace is left wanting.

Im a firm believer that if you move to a country, you live by the laws they set and if you dont like it, then you can just get the fuck out of there. Im glad Australia is standing up for itself and telling those PC artists where to go.

Good on ya Australia, now if we could only get the NZ govt to adopt the same attitude.
Interesting that you should titled the thread - "Australia Stands Up For Itself."
IMHO - I read the 'article' you supplied as "Liberal Party Leadership Games Begin - Australian Federal Treasurer Comments on Muslims and PM Jumps on the Bandwagon."

World of media, making up titles to make the article seem like a praise of a dig.

This is just john howards government spouting shit to help hide the fact that hes screwed up with iraq and get the rednecks on side.

I can see how this is appealing to alot of the population, the PC bullshit gets on my wick but there was alot of jealousy of outside nations when they saw Hiter have the balls to make laws against the Jews, Gypsys, handicapped, communists and etc. This is the government in the eyes of many racist and ignorant yobos, saying its okay to target certain areas of the population that doesnt fit in.

Austrailias perception of past, present and future is predominantly written on fresh WHITE paper. Racial harmony over there means everyone living in different suburbs, which just makes things worse.

They are a huge geographical mass rich in minerals with a relatively small population, thats what makes them the lucky country.
Without that luck, they would be royaly screwed

I think the problem may be extremists and crusaders of any kind - religious, political, cultural, safety.

Basically anyone with firm opinions about how I will live my life, and a belief that they have a special right to use force to save me.

    For example;

In Saudi Arabia it is illegal to have a Christian church, but they expect a mosque wherever the think they should have one. If they are not allowed they cry diiscrimination on religious grounds.

Hypocracy and double standards here i THINK.

    What a load of ...

My father was one of those so called "poor fucks". He died 6 years ago at the age of 68 with major respiratory problems.

Is my mother getting anything, like fuck.

Those reperations they are giving are so restricted that something like only 100 people are going to get anything. Thats from 10 years over there with literally thousands of NZ soldiers having served.

Its not even our governments money. The USA paid this to the NZ gov years ago to be paid out to the Vetnam vets and NZ is trying to keep as much as they can for themselves.

Dont talk about a caring, progressive gov here in NZ. Its the same as every other gov. Looking after its own arse above everything and dominating those sheep that follow.

We used to be world leaders in social welfare for our populace, now we are no better than a lot of 3rd world countries.

If our country is so progressive and caring then answer me this,

WHat exactly do we get for the taxes we pay to them?

A health service? What a joke.
Better roads and transport systems? a Farce
An effective police force? Self funding through fines now
The armed Services? Even more of a joke
Education? Dont even start me on this one

All I can see is a gov that gives away our taxes by signing stupid agrrements.
Supports development in other countries at the detriment of ours.
More Beaurocrats to bolster the gov ego.

This isnt just the party in power now (why do they call it POWER), but every party now in the system. They are all just feathering their own nests.

I belong tho the most heavily taxed and least represented group in the country, I'm of European decent, male, hetrosexual, employed and middle class.

A caring govenment here is a load of fucking bollocks.

Took 40 odd years of fighting against a savage, ruthless , ideologically driven enemy, vastly wealthier and better equipped , for the Vietnam veterans to win even that grudging admission from their enemy, the NZ government, and a token compensation for a few.

    Thanks, but small thanks.

Don't even start me on the ICI firemen.

Anyone who imagines that any NZ govenment in the last 30 years has been in any way caring progressive humanitarian or just, or in any way interested in righting past worngs (unless at someone elses expense), needs to take a deep breath and open their eyes. You have nothing to lose but illusions.

Not so much that we like him or his policy, it's too much of a hard line approach to take over here. Most of us love New Zealand and don't want to move to Australia. The trouble is, there seems so many things Australia's government is doing better than ours. Taxes are lower, wages are higher. It's really no surprise there's a steady stream of disgruntled Kiwis leaving to look for a better life in Australia, and JH's speech voiced things that have been getting under our skins recently. I'd rather had a government that stands up for the nation, even though the speech was a bit extreme.

Special allowances are being made for muslims, like their own public places of worship and it seems special swimming pools just for muslims as well. What's wrong with going to our swimming pools? Too many icky christians in them? I like this line in JH's speech: "We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us."

I don't think special allowances should be made to make an incumbant religious group happy. They've chosen to move over here, and in doing so they accept New Zealand as home. Then they try ty change it to make it more like their old home. The government should be concentrating more on keeping Kiwis happy. But! I hear you say, the government has been voted in by New Zealanders. Ah, has it? Labour has never gained 50% of the vote in the last few elections. The only way it's been in has been by coalitions. We didn't elect three parties to join forces just so Labour could govern, did we?

Bah, politics, I'm getting off topic.
I apologise for the rant, but it's an issue that fucks me off. We vote them in based on their policies (not that I voted Labour!), and then laws get passed through government the public weren't given a say in. Especially those who didn't even vote for the current shambles.
