Advice please

One of the members of the UK Honda Blackbird Association was recently holidaying in the South Island and she was painfully introduced to our constabulary

I presume that her second pinging was a camera of some sort! Anyway, see her tale below. Anybody have any idea about the easiest way for her to remit her fines from the UK? I presume her notice didn't give a bank account for direct transfer!

Yeah, you guessed it!!! Okay, need some advice here. I was stopped on my
second last day in NZ doing 67k in a 50k. Fair cop, as they say, they were
very nice and I fully admitted liability.

I received that notice today, worst luck. Was more than happy to pay too.

However, with that is another one for the day before! Now, I was not stopped
and alledgedly was doing 124k in a 100k. Personally I saw no speed cameras or
police so I have no knowledge of this at all. I did pass through the area on
that day though.

So where do I stand with the second one? Also I have no idea how I am supposed
to pay these fines from the UK? If I send a cheque thats in UKpounds! If I
send cash, its liable to get lost or nicked as first fine is $120
second fine is $170.

Any thoughts Geoff would be appreciated!!

Well the first one she has the doc's to pay the fine, the second one she can ask for a photo to show it was her (good for a pic for wall of fame anyway)
She can pay before she goes or likely she can wire the funds to westpac with the infringement notice number (not sure)
Personally I would say get fucked and fly home and forget about it, they aret exactly going to get interpol to chase you, or deny you entry to NZ again.

If she`s got no intentions of ever returning to N.Z. then she can forget it and as Quasievil says they`re hardly likely to send a S.W.A.T. team to the U.K.Brit police write off speeding fines to our continental cousins as it`s too much hassle and expense chasing them up,in France you have to pay on the spot or you aint going anywhere.I wouldn`t bet on any crime being "forgotten",that`s a mistake others have made including a Brit tourist being arrested for deserting from the Foreign Legion and thinking that 30 years later they wouldn`t nab him for it,if it`s on the police computer then they`ll get you,particularly in a place like N.Z. which requires a lot of info from tourists before you get past customs,they`ll know who she stayed with,where e.t.c. from what they asked on the entry card you have to fill in.I know only too well how long the flight from here to Auckland is and I certainly wouldn`t want to be put on the next plane out shortly after arrival.If I were her and wanted it sorted I`d phone the N.Z. Embassy in London and ask them for advice,in these days of money transfer and international credit card transactions there`s no reason why it shouldn`t be safe and quick to send money across the world.

Yep. Agree with the above.

As long as she was riding on a UK license, then it's probably not going to be such a big deal.

Similar thing happened tome when over in the UK. Got pinged by camera, rental co forwarded to my 'uk' address, which was forwarded over here. Nice person at UK police enquiries suggest that if I wrote in saying I was in NZ then they wouldn't bother chasing it. Too much hassle and out of their juristriction.

However, I wouldn't just forget about it - you might want to come back some day. Whats a couple of hundred bucks compared to being banned from nz.

Can any of the cops on this board suggest the best way forward?

Be careful with the no pay advice. Thanks both to NZ Govt. depts now sharing data with Customs, and Customs agencies sharing data around the world due to 9/11 it is concievable that she could be picked up at Customs here or at any step of her journey home, or any subsequent overseas trips. The NZ Police HAVE sent people overseas to collect traffic fines. There was a scandal about this 6 months or so ago.

She can write a cheque for the equivalent amount in pounds (about 40 quid for the 67km/hr one), she doesn't have write 120quid on the cheque. Also most banks with half decent Internet banking allow you to make an electronic deposit direct to the relevant foreign bank a/c. Just use the ticket number/s for the ref number.

And definitely ask for a photo for the second one.delay it long enough to get over the expense of the trip.

Good advice all round - appreciate it and I'll point Alison to the thread when I get home tonight (Yep, having a quick bit of time out at work

).

Have a good weekend all - I'm off to Melbourne for a long weekend with Jennie to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary. A bit of greasing with the better half never goes amiss to allow unhindered biking exploits in the future.

The cops here have to write down your home address on the ticket, dunno why as I can't see them sending the cast from "Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" around to address to menace you into paying.

Still, best to dub-up the dosh in case you want back into NZ, especially as costs get added on for non-payment, of course if you're a broken-arsed looser Kiwi the courts will wipe them and give you "Community Service" to pay off your debt, works out about 1 hours work for every $400 owing

The Police Infringement Bureau, a subsidiary of Inland Revenue Dept, will gladly accept a foreign personal cheque. Don't venture near a UK bank - it'll cost you a small fortune to send a telegraphic transfer or bank cheque to NZ.
The rate used when the chq reaches the PIB is the "cheque buy rate" which today is 0.3521. So thats 102 pounds for NZ$290 if you are interested. The PIB will take a close enough approach.
It seems Tourists to NZ are an honest bunch and pay up in droves. I guess its a case of having a clear conscience when you return and for many not wanting to get black listed by the rental companies.
ps can your friend check if my traffic fine has lapsed in the UK now after 20 years! I guess they are busy looking for Osama at present.

When I was there I rode a bit more sedately than usual,here it`s Banzai time in traffic and I`ll carve up,cut-across and use the wrong side of the road to bypass lines of cars if it`s safe to do so,anything to get through the city as fast as possible.Maybe an old-fashioned kind of view but I thought I`m a guest in someone else`s country and would no more take the piss than if I were a guest in someone`s house.Bit of speeding of course out in the sticks but definately kept my nose clean going through built-up areas,in fact anywhere there was any sign of habitation,or in traffic.I`d have paid any fine,as you say it would have been pretty bad not to as the rental company went out of their way to sort me out when the original plan fell through and they`d rightly not have been impressed if I`d got done and left them to sort it out.

thought I would come on here myself and thankyou all for your excellent advice. I did want to pay the first fine where I was stopped. However, I always object to the lack of evidence!!! I shall most definately pay the fines as I do want to return to your lovely country one day.

I have been back now since the end of June so I did think they had forgotton my misdemeanors..............unbeknown to me there was a second one!!!!

Shame you guys don't have a time limit in which they can nab you. Over here if you don't receive anything within 14 days you can tell them to get

I guess I did drive rather fast over there, well I was in a hurry see, I wanted to go and swim with dolphins and I needed to get there!!!!!!

Hi there, as per the previous details on this post I did pay the fine from when I was personally stopped by the police. However, I did write requesting a photo of the second offence. I have no knowledge of the second one and if they come up with the photo and its me then I will pay up.

HOwever, they seem to be ignoring my letter as I have just received a reminder for that offence. I am writing another letter to request a photo of it.

Is this within my rights????? Don't know much about NZ law things.

Anyone any idea?
