Here's a serious suggestion: get some professional motorcycle tuition. A lot of the tutors will give basic maintenance, pre-start and weekly check instruction. Combine this with the fact you aren't either learning through trial and error or picking up someone elses bad riding habits and it's money well spent. Yes, it may seem expensive but it pays for itself many times over.
