Today, a new experience for me. A fire truck failing to give way at a roundabout!

I was turning right, and he was turning right, from directly opposite me. I was approaching him (facing 90 degrees to the right of where I started) and he just pulled out, focussed on me. Bastard was even wearing ear muffs! Is there a law about that?

I thought you'd expect better than that from an emergency serviceman. I rang up and complained about it, and the chief fire officer agreed entirely and he said he'd put the message on.

Didn't you see the red flashing lights ?

The ear muffs would be for OSH - it can get pretty loud in those cabs.

I'm assuming the lights and sirens weren't going at that time... not a good thing to happen, just as well you saw him and took whatever action you needed to avoid a crash...

Just like the cop who did a U turn right infront of me and required evasive action to avoid running into him... twat (and no his lights and siren weren't on either)

But we wear helmets to protect ourselves. Not to ignore other road users. And these looked like good ear muffs, so technically they probably would of blocked out a lot of sound. This, is not a good thing.

Seems that public transport and fire trucks seem to not bother with us bikes, I've had a few run-ins with buses, but in saying that I have also had a few who have been good to me.......not everyone will be nice to you......

Really good (tm) ear muffs actually filter out dangerous/loud noises whilst still allowing conversation and normal sound to be heard fine.

Hopefully he was wearing some like that.

true enough. and what i was meaning was they would have muffled sound the same as lids do.
i got called an idiot by a trucky.
riding home in the rain, and him fully across the opposing lane, heading into mine. all i did was look up at him and shake my head. guess they have no idea how big they are compared to us. i wouldnt have minded had it been dry, but rain changes things.

I don't wear ear muffs when I ride in the fire truck, and I've never seen anyone at our station do so either....seems kinda odd.

as Glen say's normal to wear hearing protection in older fire trucks, most often the "Mack"( HEP) snorkel crew in south ak, and some of the older trucks.

In fact not too many years ago many truckies and opertors of mobile cranes could be seen sporting hearing protection.

Nothing illegal there, failing to give way, yeah thats not good, I know the Naiper Chief well so will be giving him some shit when I am down there in a couple of weeks.
