They're a great idea, I have a mate with one and it gave early warning of a cam lobe that was running....

BMW has these on engine sump and gearbox and final drive. I suppose its a good idea, In a sort of a way.

I thought most cars/bikes had these from the factory? It's an idea that certainly can't do any harm - but you don't need to buy anything:

Magnetize your original sump plug by stroking it in one direction with a magnet every oil change. It will last until the next change, if you change your oil when you should!

Do this to your screwdrivers too....

    Great idea.

You get an indication of how much things are wearing in your engine, and also get those particles taken out of circulation (arguably the oil filter does that too, but a helping hand doesn't hurt)

    Everyone should have one.

    Got any aluminium squirrels, Mister?

I have an idea (yeah, just the one).
The man that came and installed our ADSL line many moons ago (eejit drilled through 6 floor joists, when he could have easily routed it around them, but I digress...) left his magnetic screwdriver behind (Ta, Mate!) but the blardy thing broke recently. I'm going to take the magnetic tip thingie (technical term), drill a hole in my sump ploog, and glue it in there.
    Yay, me!
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

If you don't want to magnetize the pluggie, just stick a small magnet onto the tip of the plug.....hang on, i just remembered something:

Who wants a small magnet? Cheap to KB'ers! I have many of these at work, tiny Neodymium buggers, intensely strong for thier size. Serious offer! I'll post 'em out for $3 including postage. Mmmmm beer money.....

Don't give those to Ducati owners Allun. Bend a crank, that stuff would.

You mean if it gets loose inside the engine?

So does anyone want one of these wee magnets?

NZ post seem happy enough about sending them as long as they are packaged correctly (bubble wrap would you believe!) and there's little danger of them hurting yer engine (excpet maybe the aforementioned Duc's) because
    a) they will want to stay stuck to the sump plug
    b) i'd recommend aralditing them to the plug anyway
    c) they won't get sucked up through the oil pickup filter

Maybe i should send one out free with every lap timer purchased (shhhh, secret project, details next week!)
