I kinda agree they are pointless, I too have recieved numerous letters from the police telling me my driving caused offence and that after they recieved another they would prosecute me, well they obviously couldnt count. Turns out all the complaints were one guy, bastard!

Have also complained about driving to *555 and heard nothing back about it.

I like the motto, "Wing Mirrors, Use em or lose em!" Citizens Policing!

The only thing 'dobbing' the driver does is make you feel a bit better. I used to do it when the kids were young and in the car for somethings that were dangerouse but now I don't bother. I once pinged a cop for going through a red light when they were testing out bikes here in Christchurch............never heard anything back, so the whole thing in my view is one big expensive joke.

Im a linehaul trucker and use *555 more times than I care to admit, theres a lot of cases where a cop has nailed a driver and Ive stopped to chat to him, with charges following, the most recent a guy passed me on double yellows (I was 20 metres long travelling at 93km/h and 42 tonne) with oncoming cars, I noted his rego and was considering "shall I *555 or not?" when OMG!!!! he passed a fuel tanker ahead of me on yellows on a blind hill.... so srtait on the celly and while talking to the operator he passes an ambulance (good move if you happen to get it all wrong) in the path of an oncomming truck.... two highway units got him in Dannevirke, I stopped too, and the tanker stopped (he wasnt overley impressed and seemed to know the driver as he seemed pretty confident in his description of his pedigree)

Turned out the driver was disqualified, and driving his girlfriends car ..... result ... the 3 occupants had a long walk the rest of the way to Napier as the car was impounded (wonder if he still has a GF) .... the cop rang me 4 days later and told me the outcome, he was appearing in court on 3 counts of dangerous, driving while disqualified aand a couple other charges pending.
the amazing thing is .... the cop said he fully admitted to the 3 passing moves and felt it was quite safe as the vehicles around him got out of the way ! despite recieving 3 *555 calls in the space of less kms

Its amusing really in a waay ..... people seem to forget they have a unique traceable identification tacked on their vehicle and so many people have cell phones now and prepared to use them
