Temperature cause for concern?

I've owned a 96 gsxr 750 for 4 weeks now and it seems to be running a bit hot at low speeds. On the open road it is fine sitting at 75 - 90 degrees depending on how hard you push it. In urban areas at 50km it goes up close to 100 and if your stuck in real slow traffic it shoots right up to about 109. The fan kicks in at about 105 but doesn't seem to bring the temp down slows the increase though. Generally seems to be running hotter than most bikes but is this hot enough to warrent concern - I don't do much low speed running. It has a brand new radiator too.

my k5 runs at about 85 normaly but when im goin slow in traffic it will get up to about 105....my macanic recons my fan should kick in at about 110 and that running at this temp is no cause for concern

What's your temperature gauge redline Slopster? If it's not redlining I'd say your bike is probably fine, just doing what it's designed to do.

Excuse my ignorance, but is it oil cooled? If so, then I'd imagine that the hotter ambient temperatures at the moment are causing the hot running. Ditto for any cooling system. Is your oil at the recommended level? Apart from lubrication, the function of oil is to cool and clean.

The fact that the fan is activating is a good sign! I'm no expert but I'd say the fan could never provide the same cooling effect as open road ram air pressure. If it's redlining or getting very close then get professional advice and don't ride it. If you've got a block in the cooling system you could be in the shit if you don't deal to it.

If you've got a manual check the numbers and the trouble shooting section.

Hey retroGSXR guy, all GSXR's from WN (1993) and later are water cooled. Temp guage on SRADs and later is digital (that's how he knows the exact temp its reading), so there isn't a 'redline' as such.

Slopster, the 750Y I did have and the K4 I've gotnow both said in the manual that you should check for problems if the temperature guage exceeds about 120 degrees. 110 is hot, but still within normal operating parameters.

If you say it has a brand new radiator & you have just brought it,would suggest to me the previous owner,has had some issues as well
But the temp figures you are talking seem high but normal

Yup, I've seen up to 109 on both my 750 and 1000. Nothing to worry about.

Cool I wasn't really too worried but it was running a bit hotter than my mates R6 when we were riding together so I thought I'd ask. Probably just the hot ambient temp at the moment (and it is bloody hot). I was just a bit supprised that the fan didn't bring it back down to 100 or so.

My K6 GSX-R600 does the same...when running slow it shoots up to 100 deg+. Fan comes on a 105, usually cools it down to 99 where it switches off again.

Blame the weather. My beast normally runs at 86 - 88 C unless chugging along in traffic but the hot weather down in the 'Naki recently is seeing 103 on the guage and me melting inside my leather jacket! Oh well, just an excuse for maintaining adequate liquid cooling on both counts
