    Overtaking

I'm just as guilty as anybody else on here for the following:
Many of us overtake in places whre most cagers wouldn't even consider it.
When on a powerful machine as narrow and as quick as motorcycle of any decent engine size, overtaking manoeuvres can be accomplished very quicky and on short straights that other vehicles could never match.

I've seen bikers overtaking in areas where even I wouldn't consider it and yet many of us overtake in places we think are safe. Yes, there is clear visibility between a set of corners and a short straight is all it takes. BUT, we often judge our overtake based on the speed of the traffic around us or the speed of cars that we expect to be coming the other way at similar speeds to the cars we are overtaking.

Warning: when you overtake on a real short stretch of road or between corners with what appears to be enough room, then consider that if you are doing this on your bike, who is to say that someone else is doing exactly the same coming the other way on their bike? If that's the case, you really cannot complete that overtake in all safety.

So, whenever you are about to complete a speedy, short distance overtake, do so in the belief that a motorcyclist is coming the opposite way at the speeds that you will hit during the overtake and I believe there will definitely be times that you will know an overtake cannot be completed without endangering yourself or others.

Just a thought but one worth considering I think.
If the destination is more important than the journey you aint a biker.

Good thoughts Batman; i often think the same when in my 4 vehiculared contraption, go to overtake thinking there'll be room when a car appears and i cancel the move; well if that car had taken 1 more second i'd have gone for it.. then what!

still.. you live and learn otherwise you come back and do it all over again until you really learn

    .

Agree with you PaulJust to add - The back end of overtaking moves has to be considered especially with the awesome roll on speeds some of the bigger bikes have today - Some people just focus on the overtaking and fail to read the speed required to get around the corner at the same time OR negotiate the oncoming corner OR to pull up behind the next vehicle. One time I did a quick overtake and misjudged the corner I was going into - I carried too much speed and as a result hurriedly braked, chopped down and bliped with the clutch open and almost pogo-ed the bike off the road. A mate did something similar only he hit false neutral...paniced, bashed it into first at 140k and locked the back wheel up all the way into a ditch.

All they did was leave me there with a cold wet sponge in my hand and a neck and back brace holding me still... as if I could wash myself. So much for THAT fantasy!!

I have seen that often - and also see it when one guy passes in marginal conditions and then the two or three behind him decide "He got past, must be o.k." - the sheep mentallity!

But yeah, I DO think "what if somebody else is coming the other way cutting close to the centre line and hauling arse" quite often when in a twisty bit of road.
