strickly speaking, the 2nd pic is the correct answer as "x" was found.

However, if it was worded "solve for x"...

I do not see anything wrong with Mr Hitcher's first example (the El Nino one). It is factually correct, and well written. Indeed the style reminds me somewhat of my own when required , in my youth, to write essays on boring and trivial subjects. Clearly the author knows his subject entirely and finds the exercise facile and trivial. He should be promoted to a higher form, where he would be more challenged (I say "he" , in my experience this style is always the work of a young man)

I have the "find x" one on my fridge.... I think it epitomizes the slack way we use language now. I would be fighting to get some credit for that answer. Slap the teacher for poor language skills.
I did like the one where it ended up as a picture of the person hanging... very clever.

    Where's the pic?

EDIT: There it is! I love that site -- my favourite comic. www.xkcd.org

    Here's the original (http://www.xkcd.com/c135.html)

Oh, and yeah, SpankMe, why the fuck can't you upload PNGs?

Well they're obviously smarter than those Aliens from signs. The ones that can travel vast distances but don't wear suits to protect themselves from humidity
