    to be honest

i really dont no but the forks are very soft on the bike .But when i put a bit of air in them it brings them up and stiffens it up.

Id start with a pushbike pump & add 10 psi then experiment from there, I wouldnt go any higher than 20 psi or so as your fork seals may suffer. I also wouldnt use a gas station airline either as you only need a very small amount & its real easy to overdo it

The fact that it's an 89 DT may change things but.

The vents in the forks are there to let air out. If the forks are too soft it may be that the springs are sacked out. Reasonably likely on a bike this vintage.
As a starter try changing the fork oil, maybe with a heavier grade but my guess would be that this hasn't been done for some time. Start with 10 wt and see how it goes.

They are there to let air out.
To do the oil, get any basic dirt bike maintenance book.
You will have to take the forks apart, the one thing you will have to find out is the oil level, I could guess but I won't.
What you could do is take the caps off, take the springs out and then measure the oil level with the fork springs out and the sliders compresed and subtract 10mm to get the level you should have from the top of the fork with it compressed and the spring out when you re fill it.
Flush the fork oil a couple of times by pumping the damping rod up and down until it comes out clean.
Then fill it to the level you came up with, pull the slider up, drop the spring in and put the cap back on.
    Repeat for other leg.
If you want to stiffen them up a bit more take the cap off and add oil at about 5-10 cc a time until they feel right.

And remember, working on bikes is as much fun as riding them.

    my old XR250

manual recommended putting about 10psi in them.
That should keep you out of trouble.

guys early 80's bikes actually run air in them unlike late model bikes with upside forks in them, about 10psi is a good start
