Any learner been busted for over 70kmh???

Im just about to get my learners license and I reckon the current law of max open road speed of 70Km/h is bloody ridiculous. It just seems so un safe to hold traffic up by such a huge speed or sit so close to the shoulder to let cars pass (if the roads are even wide enough!!). Also trucks will have to go around you & get close, on smaller roads that doesn't sound like fun at all. Which lets face it the majority aren't that wide in NZ. Even on a motorway that sounds dangerous to me

My question is, has anyone been pulled up doing 80+ with learners plates on?

It really does sound crazy to me. On one hand (a good hand I might add) you can't own a bike bigger than 250cc but then they slow you down to a snails pace, why??? If you weren't on to it enough to stop quickly at 100 then you shouldn't be on the bloody road in the first place

I hope im not alone on this
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded

I have passed Highway Patrol Cars on the Auckland motorways going 100km/h with L-Plates on with no ill effect.

As long as you are not riding like a complete moron, the cops will let it slide as most of them (so i've heard) think it is a stupid and dangerous law as well.

    Agree with Chisanga.

Ride safely, they'll leave you alone.

put simply do not put an l plate on

i have been pulled over over 30 times in the last 2 years....

not once have i been givin a ticket for no l plate or for exceeding 70 kph limit

just do 100-110 on main highways etc...with the flow of traffic

and if you do get pulled up and they try and ticket you for it explain to them how dangerous it is to do 70kph in a 100 kph zone

I agree that 70km/h is dangerous on a motorway, but perhaps the idea is that learners gain some experience off the big bad motorway for a little while ? Maybe 'they' should explain/reinforce this a bit more ?

I spent a couple of years off road learning how a bike handles before even getting on the road.

Just to answer skidMark's comment - I have had no issues at all displaying an L-Plate in my almost 3 months of riding almost everyday around Auckland.

Just ignore the speed restriction mate. Same speed as those around you is safer.

No L plate + speeding ticket (cos who actually KEEPS to 100??) = $400 fine for no L plate.

L plate + speeding ticket (usually) = just speeding ticket.

Of course, if you've captured a leprechaun, then the little bugger has no doubt given you his pot of gold, and you can bloody well do what you like.

(Someone check the above equations, I'm too tired to care...)

I was gonna say this too but couldn't be bothered typing it out

I'm sure Mr. Donor exceeded 70km/h on his first ride on Rosey today

at which point i would slow down let them go past going up to 140 or so ...now by this point ive been winding my bike up behind them....then usually split inbetween them and the car next to them at 185, making some sort of gesture

    usually a wanker symbol

hmmm maybe i just wanted an excuse to go fast haha

I have a broken L plate on my bike. And I always go the speed limit of 100. Havent been pulled over yet *knock on wood*.

I think its plain silly that you have to go 70K. People on car learners dont have to.

I started out riding at 70K, but after a week of riding around country roads, and gaining a little bit of experience I thought stuff it.

I agree in a fashion with your sentiments and I believe that it is more about rider 'attitude' and confidence than whether or not you have an L-Plate on.

I would like to think I ride confidently and assert my lane position etc. whilst sharing the road ... that is why I believe I haven't had a problem.

If I wobbled everywhere and always rode on the left side of roads i'm sure I would have more issues.

I'm out in Bucklands Beach skidMark, after watching your Utube vids today i'm not entirely sure that we have complimentary riding styles

I went with the L plate because if I did get caught doing over 70 thenb it was only one fine, never got pulled up although I tried to avoid 100k zones just incase
