I think its plain silly that you have to go 70K. People on car learners dont have to.

I started out riding at 70K, but after a week of riding around country roads, and gaining a little bit of experience I thought stuff it.

I think we got our GNs about the same time. I stuck to 70 for the first 800 k whilst running it in (so as not to go over 4500 revs). Didn't find it a hassle really, but as soon as I got to the point where the manual said I could go up to 6500 revs, I found myself going 90 - 100. The 800ks experience was useful I think, at first going 70 was PLENTY fast enough - like someone said earlier - maybe the point is to keep learners OFF the motorway?

The moment I got confident enough with my riding I took off my L plate, the way I saw it is that all you need is 1 wanker cop to ping you for the $400 fine and 25 demerits and that zipping along normally below the radar would be safer. I got pulled over doing 112 on the way to RRRS, the cop was obviously in a good mood as he just gave me the ticket for 12kph over rather than raping me with the no L plate, over 70kph, 42kph over what im supposed to be doing tickets. The advice he gave me was to wear the L plate and just go 'at a speed I deem safe'.

Do you actually know what 'rape' is?

Lost my L-plate doing 130 on motorway during Westpac run. Cops made me go faster. Will put one on for my restricted test in May.

I had a 125 when I first started learning and I had my L plate on all the time. But once I got my 250 Sherpa I never had the L plate on except for when I did the restricted test. I don't speed other than going max 110kmph (occasionally) on the highway, so I figured the likelihood of being pulled up for speeding was miniscule compared with being pulled over for doing over 70kmph with an L plate on.

Perhaps most cops would ignore the L plate if they saw you speeding - but there are also some nazi cops out there who will ping you for everything.

A few people have suggested that perhaps the 70kmph rule is really to deter learner riders from being on the motorway/highway. That's fine if you live in a big city where you can go travel far without needing to going on a motorway/highway, but no good for the likes of where I live - I have to go on the highway to get anywhere.

Bear in mind that not displaying an L plate is a breach of licence conditions, therefore would void any insurance claim.

    Busted

'On a ride last night & one of the girls got a little behind (nice one too).
Got pinged @ 116kph ($120) + $400 for on Learners & theatened with $400 for no L plate. She arrived at the pub with a $520 ticket & lo & behold the cop pulls up a couple of minutes later, calls her over & takes off the $400 for Learners. He had a conscience ,especially as he also rides a road bike & recently bought a tyre off the victim at the bike shop she works at.
He must have been woried how much the next tyre was going to cost him!

I thought you always slid everywhere on your footpegs, exhaust, headlight and fuel tank. But you do it all with such aplomb!
