Newbie needs help

I am riding an srx250 with with a cheap malaysian FKR epsilon 80/90-17 on the front and thai Vee Rubber 57s v249 110/80-17 on the rear. I am not overly happy with either of these and want to upgrade. Also, apparently my bike is meant to run 90/90-16 on the front and 100/90-18 on the rear, would changing to these sizes be the best bet. I am commuting as well as taking longer rides over the weekends, any advice would be hugely appreciated as I really have no idea.

I dont know if you realise,but the last digits of the tyre numbers,are the diameter of the tyre,so you want to go from 17 inchfront to a 16 & at the rear you want to go from a 17 inch to a 18,this would involve new wheel rims
Can you check what is stamped on the side of the tyre,go to the shop & cross reference with what is recommended & then choose a better brand/compound of tyre

Check your wheel sizes, like the man said. Early SRX250 had a 16 inch front, later ones had a 17 inch. Do not fit a larger section tyre unless you have to (it is hard to get 90/90 x 16 ) .

I'd suggest Bridgestone BT45s, especially for a newbie. Very safe predictable tyre with good grip and wear. Particularly good in the wet.

dunlop gt501(?) are the trick for singles. cheap, good water flow for when it rains and wear quite well

I have always had good experiances with Pirelli's but others swear by bridgestones, I hope you find a few good options, be sure to let us know how you get on, certainly the time of year to be thinking about the condition of your tyres for the lead up to winter.

Cheers. I thought these bikes only came factory standard with 16' rims in front, and 18' rims at the back, but Ixion has put me right. thanks for all the advice. I will hopefully be getting new tyres next wednesday, and now I have a pretty good idea of what to get, and it helps knowing what that last number means, so I dont look like a complete retard at the tyre shop. Any advice on where to buy in Auckland?

Further to the digit equation,the first digit is the tyre width,second is profile or height & third is the diameter
