Adventure #2 Sutherlands Hut - Wellywood.

Following on from the success of the newbie adventure ride, I've decided to do a trip to Sutherland's hut.

This is a bit more involved than your regular gravel road, but provided it hasn't been raining it should be fine. There are at least 6 stream crossings though. Nothing deeper than foot peg level though.

I've put some details up about Sutherland's on the previous thread and you can find some satellite photos etc there.

I'd like some feedback first though.

Are you keen to overnight at Sutherland's (if not it will be a very early start and long day. Overnighting at the hut sounds like way more fun!)

I'm thinking this will be after Christmas. My mate is getting married on the 13th so maybe the 20th/21st (22nd also a holiday for the Wellingtoneese!) or the following weekend.

    Your thoughts please!

    Hi there

I would be keen but it would be too close to our big trip, it would be just my luck to wreck the bike...
Also I am helping at the A1GP in Taupo that same weekend

    Bugger

I am sure there will be plenty of others that are keen though

    Cheers Scott

See here for previous post on Sutherland's

The hut sleeps about 8 - 10 people. It is a DOC hut so anyone can use it. Good water etc. The track is a 4x4 track, but you'd need big balls to do it in a 4x4 give the washouts. Much more suited to bikes.

Given that the A1GP is on the weekend I suggested I'll delay it 'til February the 3rd and 4th. I was quite keen to head up for the A1GP anyway...

    Right-o.

Dead Keen, 2 minor problems though. I'm booked all those weekends, and haven't got a dual purpose bike (yet, anyone got a cheap 600/650 for sale?).

Suitable for a noob on a dirt bike.

I wouldn't take a GN out there though. Do you have a dirt bike?

    Cheers,

    Bartman.

Yeah I saw that, but there's cheap as in good value for the money (your bike), and cheap as very little money in the wallet (me).

This was supposed to be this weekend, but due to lack of interest I've canned it.

If any one is keen to go out to Sutherland's another time, let me know...

    Cheers.

    Hi All

I had a look down there about 3-4 weeks ago and made it to the Sutherlands hut.
Great track, really fun to ride. Bit of a challenge for a newbie on a tank.
Got a bit of experience that day.

It was nice and dry, but I got stuck at one river crossing.
Ended up with the GS on its side in the water, while I dug a big rock out from
    underneath its nose.
To top it off I took the hard exit out of the river without enough momentum
and ended up spinning the rear wheel trying to get up the bank and got stuck
    again.

Then out of the blue about 5 4WD vehicles turned up.
They'd come in from the other end and were clearing the bush back from the track.
One of them jumped out and gave me a push.
This is after I realised that if I'd looked a bit harder I'd have noticed I didn't need to go up the bank.

I went back last weekend ( dusty butt 1000 practice ) but only went down as far
as the slip warning sign. Had to get back for the super bike racing

Heres a pic of the track on the way back
