Just remember you have to ride down here in a couple of weeks and we can still turn on this shit in spring....

And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Bark would be useless here...it'd blow away the moment it got off the trailer...or on the trailer for that matter!

    Yeah, me too.

Gini just rang, and she's crook as a dog (12 weeks pregnant) and can't do the mum thing any more today.

So, its on with the wet gear and off on the bike back down the Hutt motorway to Upper Hutt.

Yippee. 37 km's of white knuckle ride ahead of me...

    wish me luck...

Good luck!...at least its a tail wind!
and you can tell, when your'e doin 120 and turn your head and the wind does nothing to clean your visor, but when you get off and face the wind standing still all the rain magically disappears!

Christchurch hasn't seen wind like we've been getting since cyclone Alison of 1975 when I lived in your city. Back then your bark was blowing round alright, but it was still attached to all the trees that blew over in the forests.

Good luck Simon ..... You'll probably need a nice stiff scotch when you get there .... Just take it easy and enjoy it .... it is always worse when you're uptight and fighting it .. I should know I used to ride to college at Rongotai from Pukerua Bay everyday for a year and the wind out there used to pull monsoon sheilds off cars no probs !! You didn't so much ride as tack your bike !! The weather here is not too bad ... almost no wind and we have sunshine for the first time today ..... It'll all change at 3pm though always does just as the kids leave school.

My friend was just telling me he was going home last night when he came up behind a boy racer with a whale tail....

BIG gust ripped it clean off the car and smashed it into a gazzillion bits on the back of a courier van.......

Just about to tuck into a nice cool scotch ... from its new location in the little hallway between kitchen and bathroom. Nice ...

The ride home was surprisingly good. As mentioned, the wind was directly behind me, going about 120km's I reckon, as there was just a tiny bit of wind at my back. Except the crosswinds, which are fairly wicked.

Conditions in the last half hour.

Welly motorway is okay, no problems at all.

As you get just past the Ten Pin Bowling and Petone Station the flooding has receeded, no worries.

Korokoro lights are out; I guess the power's still out there.

From Korokoro through to Kennedy Good bridge turnoff is the worst. Lots of flooding, at least four slips over one lane, one going across all lanes which is okay to ride over (mostly mud over the inside lane, outside lane about four to six feet of mud, trees, etc). Fulton Hogan crews working hard. One lonely policeman with a shovel trying to clean up the stormwater drains. Good onya mate!

Hutt River is up past the trees on the stopbanks.

If it continues like this they will quite likely close parts of the Hutt Motorway this afternoon..... man did I get soaked going home.

Enjoy your day everyone. Just ordered the new Peter Pan movie on Sky and Gini, Tim and I are settling in for a nice cozy afternoon at home.

Excellent stuff Hooks. I've been indulging in a bit of retro stuff today at work. Listening to Rush - Hemispheres.
