    Corners are fun!

There's something I never thought I would be saying!

Had a bit of a corners lesson with Jim2 this evening - he's a patient man! Boy oh boy, when you finally get the idea, corners do get to be bloody good fun! Even on the ginny....

I have never before felt so confident on a road I've never ridden before, and have never before done corners at speed (well, speed for me is anything over 20kph...but from small acorns...).

There was a small binning incident tho.....at zero kph *sigh* Dropped the bike after one of our stops to chat about the ride I'd just done - one second I had the handlebars, the next...over she went!!! Sooooooooo embarrassing! Ah well, now I know how to pick a bike up off the floor!

I don't know why I've not been able to figure corners out for myself. I mean, I've been riding for around 18 months/2 yrs now. Just having someone show you the lines to take and give you simple tips about looking through the corner makes all the difference - well, it has to me. Now I just need to practice!

Thanks Jim, for the time and the help

Yeah, if they're this much fun on a ginny, I can't wait to get on something bigger and sportier!

It was a total pleasure to have a "student" exceed expectations almost instantly.

I still learn stuff all the time about riding, especially going out for a ride with other riders, and some of it can be pretty basic stuff too.

I'm uploading a before and after video as we speak so you guys can see what a legend judecatmad is!

It is incredibly fulfilling to watch someone go from lacking confidence, hesitant, choppy riding, to smooth, controlled, and relaxed in about an hour, including dodging cars over taking a cyclist (not the cyclist's fault!) on a blind corner without batting an eyelid, and coming within a whisker of touching boots down on the Wallaceville side of the Whitemans Valley road.

Top stuff judecatmad and looking forward to more rides soon.

Nice to know that they become fun - when you know what you are doing, I guess. At the moment I dislike them, intensely almost, especially downhill lefthanders!
Do you think you could talk him into coming up here to show me how it's done?

Great stuff jude and Jim2! Always good little stories to read. Without meaning any offence to newer riders (hell, I'm one, and I'm not offended... ), guys like Jim2 are extremely valuable. Taking the time to team up with someone who could use the tuition... he makes it sound like no effort at all, but having the mindset, the patience to teach and the willingness to take the time to go out and do it, do it well, and even enjoy doing it and getting a buzz out of it too... I just wish there were more like him.

Jim2: My hat goes off to you, mate. You do the biking community as a whole a hell of a service without even realising it. The more learners that love riding even more because of a little tuition... the better for biking. Bling well earned. Looking forward to those inspirational videos!

Heeeeyyy! I just thought of something.

What is it with you chicks throwing your bikes on the ground the first time I ride with you?

    I'm not THAT scary, surely?

I'd love to head up there mate, the weather'd be perfect about now.

Watch this space. Can't ignore a plea like that.

    You've made me blush.

At the back of my mind, Bruce Hannaford is always inspiring me to get out there and do this sort of thing. I can't fill his shoes, but I can bloody well try to keep the spirit of what he was doing in Wellington alive.

The first half of the video is pretty interesting. jude is limiting her options quite a bit by diving into corners early, running wide, and coming on and off the throttle mid corner. Note how she quite often disappears off camera due to the, erm, interesting lines she was taking.

The second half looks like a different rider. She has her head up, upper body relaxed and is flowing into and through corners. She really got much better later on too. Note how she stays almost dead centre in the viewfinder this time.

This is all down to judecatmad though. She wanted help and chose to listen and apply some of my waffle immediately. Three thumbs up!

(For those who want to know, the music is Judith by A Perfect Circle - I thought it apt)

Thanks for the vids Jim - I only wish you'd been videoing the trip down the other side of that hill we did cos I really felt as tho I'd got it proper by that point!

And altho I never knew Bruce, I'm sure he'd be very proud of you the way you're keeping the mentoring thing going - and the fact that you never shouted 'oh my god do you actually have a bike licence at all????' at me!

Looking forward to the next lesson

    Hey Jude and Jim -

Haven't managed to watch the videos (my broadband at work 'computer says no') and at home I'm on dialup...

Jude - you may have to take me on a ride and show me yourself!!

Jim - hi buddy - I might look you up for some pointers myself - can I drop you a pm sometime (I'll try not to drop anything else, like my bike)
Me and my imaginary friend have been goin' round the bend for some time now....
