    Busy morning on the Northern

Interesting commute in to Akl City this morning. Was splitting along up the top end of the northern, near Constellation, thinking "hmm, there's a few gaps about and traffic is moving freely-ish, so maybe I should swing back into the lane", so looked into my mirror to get the lie of the land only to discover another bike just off thte LHS mirror, zipping past me on the inside... . If that was a KBer, can I just say I may be slow (always <40k when splitting) but I do check my mirrors and move over for faster bikers... just be a little patient, OK?

Anyway, next thing there's sirens and lights down the bus lane, and some dude zipping down the RHS road margin (not saying he was speeding, just that he was faster than me ). Mr Plod gave him the big come-hither and they pulled over to the side for a chat... I passed them as helmet was being removed so didn't see what happened after. Anyone here ride a white Honda (sorry no other details, I'm crap at ID'ing sportsbikes...) and have a bad start to the day?
    Redefining slow since 2006...

Seen a couple of bikes in the NW buslane...
Just asking for attention from the by doing that...!

Traffic is heavy at the moment. The theory is that since all the university/polytech students have received their loans, they will be driving until the funds run out and they have to get back on the bus!!!

Yea someone from work told me that she saw 5 bikes pulled over for splitting (she had to move out of the way from a cop pulling one over) From Orewa to Tristam.

They're having a crack-down I think guys, so watch out!

Saw a guy on Lake Road yesterday on a white CBR6 F2, may have been him. We gave each other a nod. Wonder what he got done for if anything

On Wed morning came into town split the Northern the whole way passed 4 cops, they didn't even look at me, I used to pull in wait until I'd got out of their view and start splitting again but now I don't worry about it. Usually see a few cops a week but never been pulled over. Maybe it was something to do with being in the RHS safety margin?

My Fiancee commutes on the RHS margin of the motorway (is it techinically a emergency stopping shoulder on the right hand side???) everyday on her scooter doing around 40km/hr depending on the conditions. I was a bit iffy about whether that was okay but she says she passes cops quite often and they leave her be???

I suppose they don't care as long as you're being fairly responsible?

I passed a MW Patrol car yesterday at 55kph in moving traffic in his lane on the right hand side (was in a hurry).......he didn't even bat and eyelid....even moved over slightly to give me more room

Cops may have pulled 5 guys over but how fast were they going? I pass police all the time (slowly splitting) and they never bother with you. But you see some guys and they are hauling arse just asking to be pulled

    No its not.

There is usually a shoulder of around 1-1.5m next to the central barrier. It is only there because vehicles tend to slow down (and thus reduce road capacity) when there is a continuous obstacle such as a barrier within 1.5m. This is called the 'shy distance'.

I am surprised the police are so tolerant of your missus. But if the ref doesn't blow the whistle, then I guess its ok.

Oh. *antennae twitch* . So that is NOT an emergency stopping shoulder? So what is it then? Does it have a separate existence, or is it just an extension of the right hand lane ?

From what you are saying it sounds like the right hand lane actually just has a line of paint drawn down it a metre or so from the edge ? Yes ? And the bit to the right of that line, isn't actually an "anything" it's just a wayward bit of the right hand lane ?

'Cos you will get ticketed for riding on the emergency stopping shoulder. But if that's NOT an ESS, then the case is altered, quoth Plowden.

Now you mention it, I'm not aware of it ever being tested out legally.

As far as I know it is legal carriageway.

Ah ha! *Antennae positively abuzz*. AND, you would be overtaking on the right. Driving within a lane. Overtaking on the right. Not driving on an emergency stopping shoulder.

Now all that's needed is a suitable public spirited individual to put it to the test. Unfortuanely, I am precluded , on medical grounds.
