Hi guys. I haven't ridden a bike since I was about 16 (11 years ago) and am really wanting to get back into trail biking.

I figured a 250 4 stroke would probly do me nicely but possibly a 2 stroke would be fine too. Last bike I rode was a mid 90's YZ250 which I remember bailing off many times! Wish I could afford something new but not possible so going to have to settle with something old that I can thrash till it dies

Any recomendations on early to mid 90's models? I remember the RM's being pretty good back then? Been watching trademe for a couple weeks but I'm really not sure what to keep a look out for.

KDX200 cheap to buy, fix and ride.
Easy to ride too, which for me is the most important bit on trail rides.
all those 4 strokes look good, but co$t heaps to fix.

I just sold my 96 RM for $2000. Keep an eye out as there is alot of bikes around, but trade me is very quite at the moment. I'm going to get a new(ish) bike in a few weeks time.

Let us know when you got one and we can all go to woodhill!!

i spent $2k on a bike and regretted it... spent $1000's repairing it.

spend a lil extra and get something descent, it'll be cheaper in the long run and you'll also spend more time on the bike and less time pissing around

yeah i have been thinking exactly the same thing as you. What bike to get????

i have also looked at the 250 four stroke series but they are a race motor and very high maintainence but they are very easy to ride and heaps of fun. They race these in the 125 class so that is what you compare the power to. but they are not that good if you weight over 85 kg as they seem just a little gutless. Also people tend to grow out of these very fast.

The next thing i looked at was the 250 2 strokes. Very light in the air and alot faster than a 250f and a 125. maintaining them is very easy and cheap and anyone can rebuild one. But these are slowly being fased out as most of the market has to buy a four stroke and not much devalopment time and money is being spent on these anymore. The 06 is the best it is ever going to get.


The last thing i looked at was the 450f. It is a very big bike and needs to be respected in a big way but it can also be alot of fun. this is bike is something you will have to grow into. Even top moto x riders like ricky carmicheal say these 450;s have too much now to use it all on the track. but maintaining them would be the same price as the 250f but would require not as much repairs as you would never be seeing 13,000 RPM on these and how often would you be wide open throttle so wear on these would not be much.

it is very hard decision to make. sorry but i have just relised you are after a trail bike but you might want to do a bit of moto x as well.

That thing looks fucked. Trademe has some real good cheaper bikes occasionally. Most of the good deals seem to be outside of auckland though..

spend more than you can afford. it will cost u less in the long run.

That first RM is an RMX and looks well rooted.

That second RMX looks quite tidy!

Oh and I'd go for a KDX if you're just starting out again. Great all round bike that you just ride clean and put away.

You cant beat a KDX if your just getting back into it, super reliable, heaps of power for trail riding and lots of fun!
