That's why I like the big BMW twins. There's so much torque and engine-braking that you can easily ride just using the throttle ... roll-on, roll-off, repeat.

    Bliss!

    True.

Most of the time I get by with using 2,000rpm to 4,500pm rev range

And most of THAT is under 3,500rpm

Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

Nice write up Paul, I've had my 1200 X1 Lightning for a month or so now and totally agree with everything you say about Buells, living in the north there aren't alot of super long straights and plenty of corners....so I find the Buell perfect for the roads, used to ride sportys alot but dont really think I'd change back or go to a big block either, It's just to much fun to ride the Buell, awesome torque and plenty of power and speed for me. Havent ridden an XB12 yet , I imagine theyd be pretty similar ??? Cheers

Go see Pete at Wgn M/c's, you have nothing to loose except your preconcieved ideas. I was really quite impressed by it and more than anything by it's simplicity and the sheer dumb fun... I felt like I was a kid again!

    It was me.

It caught me be surprise as I am used to the Hornet which has a fair bit of torque (no comparison to the Buell). I just roll the throttle in what ever gear and it picks up speed nice and easy to make the pass.

I had no idea what gear I was in at the time on the Buell, twisted the wrist and the bike was accelerating, no problem so far. Pulled out and kept the throttle open but my speed was not increasing anymore (would have been about 100kph) I was not sure what was happening until I looked at the rev counter, hmm better change up. My mistake here was opening the throttle again in the next gear. On the Hornet no problems as the power comes on fairly easy. On the Buell it was my only 'oh shit' moment of the day. That power was amazing and I was really surprised, caught me right off guard.

I understand now what I was doing wrong, I was not riding the Buell in its ideal rev range and gear for that passing move.

Great write up again Paul. I did enjoy riding this bike as well, it really is an experience.

That depends on you and your expectations. The biggest limitation for us would be the lack of a place to carry a bit of kit. I'm a type 1 Diabetic so i have insulin, blood test meter, snack food and we usually carry a first aid kit, camera, wallets, caps etc so on the XB12SS that would mean a backpack for Vicki or a tankbag. Both our current bikes are easier to bungy stuff on but like dave said, the adventue thingy would be worth a spin.

Drop into Wellington M/C's and take one for a spin - well worth it for the giggle factor alone - cheaper than a movie ticket and more fun than jaywalking

Great write up Paul, I've been too busy riding my XB12X to write anything about it over the last few months since I got it. The fun factor is amazing! I have to concur, it is the best bike I have ever ridden, bar none. I'm going to have to get a new helmet because the grin it puts on my face has worn out the cheek pads in my current one!

2 years ago I laughed at Buells, then Big Dave got his and raved about it I thought mmmm, maybe. Then I rode one and was sold straight away.
