Was just looking around trademe. What about an early/mid 90's DR250 or XR250?

Seem a decent price and a couple in pretty good nick.

The XR and DR are both solid bikes that require little maintenance to keep going. For the age you are looking at I would be inclined to just go with the bike that is in the best condition that you come across.
The suggestions of the KDX and RMX are both very sound; the power hit isn't bad for a two stroke and its fairly straight-forward to work on these two-strokes yourself if you are keen (which you probably need to be with an older bike).
