In the real world you can't afford a Porsche - so go and have a shit load of fun on your value for money bike.Leave the Porsche owner sweating in his suit ripping people off to make the money for his toy.

Mind you,as a mechanic I'm supposed to spend my life ripping people off - how come I can't afford a new R1 let alone a Corolla?

I like WINZ quotes - I have to double my estimate because they pay me before I even start the job.....then they increase the customers benifit to cover the repayments. It's a win/win.

    Some figures might help you?

Here are some for your discussion with the salesman. I work with car nuts. I got these figures from a Porsche fanatic. US Spec 480bhp 4wd 911 Turbo. 0-60 3.8s, ss1/4 12.4s, top speed 192 mph. Add an S-pack inc. gearbox and it goes up to 520bhp.

By way of comparison the original ZX12R and Hayabusa both topped 192 before the 'voluntary' 300km/h limit was applied to Japanese bikes. I have figures for a stock ZX14 of 0-60 2.5s, ss1/4 9.7s@142mph and 188 mph top speed (restrictor in place). These figs were obtained by a lightweight professional on a drag strip with non-stock tyres. Its still very fast.

As you can see they are quite evenly matched but the bikes accelerate a lot quicker. On the road this translates to 'get in front then stay in front'.

    Ride safe.

I know it's a bit off topic, but I used to work for the ministry and it's not what happens. They deduct it from their benefit in weekly installments until it's paid off.

    Rant over.

    hangs head in shame...

I took one on setting off from the lights on the motorway a couple of weeks ago. Up to about 60k i was not doing too badly then i had to change gear and left it a tad late and his turbo seemed to kick in.

But, although he got passed me, that is all he did, i was not left for standing (probably would have been if we not backed off at 135).

Also I can still have a big smile because:
    * I did manage to pull quite a nice wheely in the process.
    * I did miss a gear change so could have kept up a tad longer.
    * I only paid $12.5k for my bike - how much was paid for the car?

You really do have a chip on your shoulder. What makes you think Porsche owners rip people off to pay for their cars? I know it's a crime to live outside of poverty in NZ but some people do make good money and don't have to steal or get their fingers dirty doing it.

By the way, a 911 Turbo is 4WD (referring to your earlier post about it putting heaps of rubber down on the rear)

Depend a lot on the bike you're putting against I would imagine.

Have to remember the new 911 turbos are up about 50kW (ish, I think) on the older model and have the torque a lot more readily available with the variable geometry turbos. Depending on track/strip I'd guess car on the track and bike on the strip.

Too many variables to make a call though

Standard answer...average race track, not one that favours high speed machines with minimal corners, top litre bike versus something like a Porsche 911 turbo, Porsche will win. Bike can't compete with lateral traction or braking. Plain and simple physics.
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.

Well I was thinking of lawyers - but my lawyer is a really cool dude so I retract that statement.

Doesn't matter if it's 4x4 or not (I've got a 4x4 too y'know) it would probably have to back off the proportioning to the front anyway.Any 911 would have more available traction than just about any other vehicle on the road from a standing start. It has weight in all the wrong places.....except for getting off the line....probably kill clutches though.

A mate of mine (He's now married to my ex) Had a Porsche 911/ 996 non turbo & a Ducati 999s both at the same time until his wench (HaHa,whos laughing now sucker) made him sell them.
The Porsche even as a non turbo absolutely urinated on the 999 in every situation gauranteed.

Straight Line: Street Bike will win easy. These on NZ drag strips are capable of 10 second flat 1/4 mile times. I know personally that the late dss3 put down a 10.01 on a stock Yamaha R1. Race spec bike (if you have 320k for a porsche, im sure 60k for a race prepped bike is pocket change) Bruce Anstey at the IOMTT had a top speed of 207mph.

Track: Street Bike will be close with a Porsche. For instance Pukekohe, Andrew Stroud did a 59 second lap on a stock K3 thousand. Race prepped Porsche GT3 does 60 second laps (might be 59's) around the same track. Make it a race bike, and there is no contest. Robbie Bugden set the lap record at 56.698... Almost V8 supercar territory...
