WANTED - Cheap Learner Bike

After seeing that I got a bike, my mate has decided that he also would rather like one to get to uni and back.. but his problem is he can't get finance so he needs a real cheap one for the time being. Anything for $1000 or less (as he'll be paying cash for it) that is a road bike (or can be ridden on the road) will do the trick.

A bargain for someone

That is my beloved old Ratty. A wonderful little bike,and when it left me a year or so ago , sound in wind and limb. I doubt it's done many miles since.
