My run to Napier and back

Friday afternoon I left for Napier. Nearly didn't go at all as I was in a state of partial shock. Five minutes before I left work for my half day off a got a notice which basically means the company I work for is trying to make me redundant after 30 years of hard, loyal service!!!!


I was bloody gutted to put it politely.

I thought I'm not going now but then I thought, bugger it. A hard ride is what I really need right now and a hard ride it was. These 1400's are amazing at consistent speeds. I took my anger and frustrations out on the bike and I know that's a dam stupid thing to do, but I felt not too bad once I got to my brothers in Napier. 4 HP's running the Tokoroa to Taupo stretch all using instant on radar. Got stuck behind one heading South for a good 15 minutes out of Tokoroa and everytime he saw a car or truck or came to a curve or rise he would flick his laser on.

Real pleased I invested in a quality radar detector. Once I slipped past her when she got stuck behind a truck, I let everyone know she was coming
Got a lot of friendly waves even from cagers and flashed a few bikers as well.

No presence at all between Taupo and Napier and what an awesome run I had. Hit my brthers place at Eskdale in 50 minutes after leaving Taupo.

I know, save the lectures, I really needed that.

So here I am back at home last night contemplating my future. What the hell do I do now?

Better start working on a CV, something I haven't needed to do for 30 odd years.

Bugger about your job, but that's life....often, after the fact and looking back, it is the best thing that could have happened. I know, happened to me - hard at the time but so glad now.

Is there no re-employment option? You know, go for another job in the same company? Some companies do that - especially since your payout is most likely going to be HUGE after 30 years....

Check to see if your mortgage insurance (if you have a mortgage of course!) had a redundancy cover. That will help see you though til you get back on your feet.

Glad you're OK tho after thrashing the bike - could've gone horribly wrong, but didn't and you're probably all the better for getting it out of your system.

On the up-side, you've probably got a shedload of experience to put into your CV And it might be a good opportunity to have a change of direction?

And if it takes a while to find something...hey...more riding time up your sleeve

Sorry to hear about your job. I hope it all works out.
I was made redundant just before Christmas. I knew it was coming so didn't have the shock you would have. Just got a job offer this week.
Gota love the Napier-Taupo road, 50mins is pretty good going on a large bike like yours.

On the job front: although daunting right now you might be pleasantly surprised with the direction you take. Could be the start of an exciting new journey? Jeepers after 30 years it's gotta be time for a change? Theres nothing like a major comfort zone shift to get the pulse racing & a new lease on life

Good thing about a 1400 you can ride hard and fast but you aint never thrashing it Redlines at 9, max torque at 5 max HP at 7500 and after that click the next gear. Never have to rev her past 7.5 to make the most progress.

After the Rangitikei plains it's all still nice and curvy with plenty of corners
She was blowing a gale across the plains and the ranges on the way back Sat arvo.

On the way down a 5 minute stop for gas in Tokoroa and the same back again. Nice comfortable bike.

That's shocking

Do you have a union? They might be able to help you out with avoiding the redundancy if you really want to go that route.

If you don't feel the redundancy is justified, then try http://www.ers.govt.nz/ - they have some good advice and contacts.

(all this is probably nothing you don't already know tho...sorry)

I really hope it works out for you, whatever happens. You never know, depending on what you do, there might be some KBers with some opportunities for you.....

bad luck dude, me 2 got made redundant after 8 years in the same Logistics company, hey walked from one straight into another tho and its better pay, better hours, never been happier!!!!!!.
I was worried to being right on xmas, but now i as happy as, there are so many jobs out there in Auckland that u need not worry, in fact you take your pick, as employees struggle to even get replies, another option is go temping for a while and test the waters, might find a whole new career.
