"Only a few days and the biggest Motocross series in the world will explode into 2007 as the fastest Motocross riders in the world battle the sandy circuit of Valkenswaard in Holland for the opening round of the World MX1 and MX2 Motocross championship. .....Coppins still has to be the big favorite entering round one, but names like Strijbos, De Dycker and Ramon look dangerous, as do De Reuver, Leok, Nagl and Philippaerts. Overall the MX1 class is going to be very, very exciting."

Has anyone seen if we are getting coverage on TV? I flicked thru sky's listings and couldn't find anything. Will have to subscribe to Mediazone for live webcast. Here come those late nights again.

    Press release:

Josh Coppins wins opening round of the 2007 FIM MX GP series.

Yamaha factory rider, Josh Coppins, has raced to a superb overall victory at the first round of the FIM MX1 GP series in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands.

Coppins had a good gate jump in moto 1 and powered his way past Belgian, Ken de Dyker, moments after the start to take the lead in front of 25 000 spectators. De Dyker retaliated in the same lap with Coppins watching his every move from behind in second. With 6 laps gone “Lizzard” pressured the Belgian and took back the lead with De Dycker fading with every lap. Coppins posted fast and consistent lap times on the rough and technical sand circuit and took the checkered flag, over 15 seconds ahead of rival Steve Ramon, for his first GP win of the season.

The final decider would see team-mates Jonathan Barragan and David Philippaerts lead the start of second 40 min + 2 lap race with Coppins pursuing in third. The Kiwi made his way past Italian, Philippaerts, however he lost too much ground on Barragan who succeeded in opening up a comfortable gap. Coppins tried to close the deficit with a few minutes left on the clock but had to settle for a strong second and his first overall win in the 15 round series.

“This is a great start to the season. I didn’t expect to be this fast in the sand but we have been putting in some hard work on the practice tracks and in the pre-season races and that has paid off here. I took my time in the first moto to get past Ken as I knew he would not be able to run a fast pace for the entire race. Once I was out front I controlled the race and won with quite a big gap. The second moto wasn’t as easy and I tried to move in on Jonathan but he was riding really well so he deserved the win in the second moto. I am happy for the Rinaldi Yamaha team - we achieved more than our goal today,” explained an elated Coppins.

The second round of the MX1 GP series will move South to sunny Spain where the hard pack circuit of Bellpuig will see Coppins start with a 6 point lead.

    Press release:

Coppins makes it a double victory at Spanish MX GP.

Factory Yamaha Rinaldi rider, Josh Coppins, has dominated the second round of the FIM Motocross World championships in Bellpuig, Spain. Rain showers on Saturday forced organizers to cancel the qualification sessions which meant riders only had an a combined warm up and timed training session to get accustomed to the muddy circuit.

Coppins posted second fastest time and rolled onto the line for the first moto with confidence. He just missed out on the hole-shot to American, Mike Brown, however it didn’t take the Kiwi long to take over the lead and build a comfortable cushion. Coppins controlled the race from the front and took the first victory with 20 seconds to spare.

Powering his YZ450F to the hole-shot in moto 2, Coppins was unchallenged as he put his head down and once again worked on a steady lead. A faultless ride saw the New Zealander cruise to his first double victory of the season to take maximum points.

“I’m really happy with the result today. After Valkenswaard we worked on a whole bunch of little things and these have definitely helped. The Yamaha has been really awesome on the hard circuits so I came into this race with a lot of confidence and a good feeling. The weather made the track conditions difficult and one-lined and I knew it was important to get a good start. I need to stay focused and take this momentum through to Portugal next weekend” explained Coppins.

Coppins will return to Belgium for a few days before heading to Agueda in Portugal with a 19 point lead in the MX1 World championship.
