12k service, do it now or later?

How important is the 12k service to be done dead on 12k?

With University just started, I've basically got no time to bring the bike into the shop for more than a lunchtime visit (they'll want more than 40minutes so it can't be done because they won't give me a loaner and don't work Saturdays or late nights).

It's currently sitting on 11.7k, so 4-6 weeks time it'll reach 12k (right in the middle of massive assignments), so after exams in mid-October will be the next booking opportunity. It'll have done an estimated 12.5-13k.

I'm mainly asking in relation to valve adjustment, most of the other servicing with my very limited understanding of what’s required at 12k, I can or are willing to attempt myself or have recently done it (motor oil/filter, brake fluid, spark plug, air filter).

Any Chch based biker's know how to do this?
Understand my motor has spacers or something on the valves, which according to a biker I've lost touch, that'll make it difficult.

Background: The valves were last inspected at 3k back in '02 when the 12-month factory warranty was about to expire.
Don't hear any noticeable valve tapping unless as expected, it's running too slowly (500+ rpm) below its recommended 1500rpm idle rpm.

do it. unfortunately easier said than done in your case.
but regualr services are great. i do a service every 10k. they service your bike as well as checking for any unusual wear and tear or possible problems that may arise in the future. which could also cost you more money in the end.
so to me as my bike is my life it is very very important.
if you can aoofrd it do it. and the sooner the better, and most of all peace of mind.

500 to a 1000 k's over is not going to matter.
I've had Harley Twin Cams on a couple of rentals go 2000 k's overdue while they were out on tours without a problem.

Yup - a little over or a little under ain't going to matter. There are so many other variables in the mix anyway (did you ride the 12,000 in town or country, ride them hard or easy, changed oil etc )... another little bit... more or less will be fine.
