ZXR400 questions

Well here they are i just need a kinda heads up about some stuff

1) what is fuel milage like i only got 160km out of the last tank of gas so is the fuel consumption really that bad.

2) those oil seals on the 250 gear lever etc are they the same for a 400

3) crash bungs do i just get standard and modify fairings or what??

4) how does one balance carbs(the ideling is all munted) because i am running low on dosh and deciding wether to do it or to get a bike mechanic to do it.

I cant comment on road fuel economy but on a raceday I went through two tnks of gas.
The gearchange oil seal thing is the same
For crash bungs I'm using the top front engine mount and slightly opened up the fairing around the bungs with an air die grinder.
You need a carb balancing tool to do ya carbs properly
To Roughly set the idles - I'd wind all the mixture screws right down then turn the mixture screw on one carb clockwise untill the idle speed stops rising.Work your way across the carbs untill theyre all done.

I used to get 200+ so yea 160 is pretty bad. You don't need to mod anything for the crash bungs on the ZXR. It's pretty sweet for that!

Yeah I get 200+ from a tank as well on the street.
On the track I'll get 4-5 sessions. Frosty runs gas guzzling flatslides so don't let him scare ya.

My ZXR400L didn't need modifying for crash bungs.

I just balanced my carbs in the weekend - you need a special tool to do this or you can try the clear hose/oil method (search the forum for carb balancing) but you will still need the hose fittings. The manual says 2 1/4 turns out for your idle/pilot mixture screws, mines set to 2 turns.

While a carb balancing tool is the usual way, you can balance the carbs on the bench without one. I will dig the info out if you want - I have never done it.

Any clues to the gas consumption. I am running 96 or whatever the other one besides 91 is. I will run her till i need the reserve to see if it wasn't a freak thing??? As to carbs i might just save up and get the mechanics to do it. Saw some second hand zxr400 carbs on trademe i might get

Just to compare (and i know about your riding style) If i go on a hard ride, i get about 140-160km's for 1 tank, and just commuting and not going hard about 200kms..... PM Milky he will know as well.....

Yeh but comparitivley it should be roughly the same as the 250. Cause the 400 has a bigger engine but a bigger tank as well so it should even out but riding hard i was still getting 190km out of the 250????

I get about 170 from 10.3 litres. It seems to be getting better actually... Dunno why, but I havent run out of gas for a long time, and I keep going further until I finally fill up :spudwhat:

Do you have the standard 'zorst on yours Hoon? mine seems to have something a little too free flowing - makes a nice sound, but not much else.
And what does flatside refer to when you talk about carbs? I assume it is a side that is flat, but where/why?

Not sure what my exhaust is but its not original as the can has no flange and is welded to the pipe....most likely a stock can from off another bike as it has a 34mm bore.

The SP models came out with flatslide carbs. They put out more power and chew more gas but are difficult to tune properly.
