An interesting thread indeed. So many opinions!

I'm thinking - One guy riding like a total fool, obviously frightened unexpectedly by an illegal road user. (No Reg/No Warrant).

I tend to think that if you ride around unwarranted and unregistered, you shouldn't be thinking of yourself as any better.

I feel sorry for people who have no insurance (elderly etc) and get hit in the wrong by people riding/driving illegally and don't receive any renumeration.

I never used the horn in the past because when it was used in accordance with fair warning they just wave.

I have used it when I was under threat.

I have also used it to good effect when another biker was under threat.

I have used it when I was not seen but not really under threat.

I don't feel I ride any differently but I do feel more willing to use it, as a fair warning and to tootle a cheery farewell (this takes practice).

The old horn was frankly embarassing. It is after all the same unit supplied on the GN125 up right through the range. I have even had WOF testers toot it a few times to check there really was a horn.

Wink Big dog your a good guy

Fair enough big dog - i think your probably one of the few who have these things and know what its for.
But back on topic here - its clear that many people do not know what their horn is for and if it were me on a scoot... well lets just say if i ever saw the bike again, there would be a 2L milk poured in its exhaust.

So my horn shouldnt have been used? In that situation I thought I used the horn to

a: Warn the scooter I was there and..
b: Let them know that they had done something wrong

If you disagree with my logic, by all means, please explain to me why I am incorrect.

Warning a scooter fair enough - but do that wouldn't you have to be behind them at the time?
Its a pretty simple logic really - a warning happens before an event.
Also on another note - how hard is it to pull up next to a scooter doing 30 and tell them they are in the wrong with hand signals or your voice?
I realize that you are fairly new to the bike game - but so are most scooter riders.
How would you feel if i belted past you, missing your bars by 1 inch, making you jump out of your boots.....just simply because you had done something wrong? Or would you prefer if i pulled up next to you - nice and safe. To point out that your indicator is still on?

The only places in the world where horn usage is discussed, and horns are used only infrequently with potentially dire consequences for the person using the horn are NZ, Australia, and the UK.

The rest of the world just uses their horn when they damn well please.

Riding with no Reg and WoF. BFD. I've ridden around for a couple of weeks at a time with neither, just through being too tired and busy to check the dates on those totally arbitrary fitness and taxation documents.

Riding everywhere at Mach 9 and close to your personal limits isn't just as illegal and just as threatening to those uninsured old people?

    We're all perfect. Yeah Right.

My personal attitudes have changed massively since I registered on this site. I don't care what you ride, what you wear, or how you ride. Just don't involve me with your stupidity on the road and I'll try to avoid doing anything stupid to ruin your day.

For those that missed it, I think karma smacked speeding_ant in the head anyway. I don't think he deserved it though, and I don't think he was unjustified in tooting his horn.

Man do things change. I remember a year or so ago every one was slating people who text and drive, and talking of dishing out punishments ranging from spark plugs over the shoulder through to punching wing mirrors with armoured gloves.

So a relatively newbie comes on here and says he honked his horn at some one who was texting and he fell off, and the hounds are released.

Texting drivers kill. Texting riders include themselves in the equation. A horn is sound waves at a harmless frequency. If a horn makes you fall off then you shouldn’t be riding. The guy got up hopefully having learnt something and there's less risk he will plough into my friends or family. Resign from the PC brigade guys.

Yeah I'd have to agree with that.

Wrong again, you cant change people permanently like that. Yeh he wont do it for about a month. Then bam he's at it again.
Drunk drivers are still out there drink driving, the guy that hit me still has his coffee and reads the paper into work.
If he came off, broke both wrists and his phone was crushed into a million pieces....while god came to him in a vision and told him to stop txting while riding. I might believe you.
Some people dont learn. And if this guy was riding a scooter, while txting. I think he's in the 5% can Darwin's theory cant touch.

If it was one of my children you did that to, I can firmly say that horn and whatever else is of usable size on your bike would need to be surgically removed from your anal cavity before you took your next shit.

    Just a bit of perspective.
Are you saying one of your offspring would be dumb enough to text while riding? Not a strong swimmer in the gene pool?

If one of my kids got caught doing that, they'd be having to get their own scooter horn surgically removed, and I'd be buying speeding_ant a beer.
