Been looking at a 91 kdx250. Took it for a rip and once warmed up the engine felt good, didn't really have the top end zing I was expecting but had a strong midrange. Front brakes were totally shit though. Anything to look out for with these?

It's an enduro bike,so will have more bottom end and mid range than a KX,but it shouldn't be breathless in the top end,there should still be some serious poke happening.They have powervalves of course,the KDX is renowned for problems with them if they aren't looked after.They didn't make the 250 for very long,there must be a reason for that.I've heard good and bad reports of the 250 and can't remember if the concensus was yay or nay....

if it has a steel tank and a key its and import and i would run, most of these have a frame number starting with kdx250F, they were nothing like the NZ ones, way down on horse power, hard to get parts for(they match nothing)
the nz new ones (plastic tank) were never that popular and only sold for a couple of years (91 and 92 i think) the are not to bad a bikes, a bit more grunt than a kdx200 of the same area, not to shabby but not to popular either, the RMX of the same era was a better bike and much closer to its mx brother, don;t have the power valve problems of the kdx200'S with drum type power valves, they will not have the same sort of horsepower as a MX 250, as said above smoother and feels slower due to heavy flywheel and more torque
He said it's an import and it has a key up by the steering head but I think it had a plastic tank. It has USD forks too which I haven't seen on any of the other kdx's for sale. Ill have to check it out and have a look at the frame number tomorrow. He reckons he's had it all checked out by a mechanic. I didn't ask specifically about the power valves though.. might have a talk to the mechanic tomorrow. Here's the link to the ad anyway.

Oh yeha is it common for these bikes to run on premix? Ths one does.
looks like a steel tank if you take a close look at seam line up by head stock appears to have seam line un like a plastic tank (rounded edges)
I'm pretty sure most of the KDX 250's had inverted forks. That looks like a steel tank.
Yeah just checked it tonight. It does have a steel tank. Frame number is dx250fxxx. What's the story with parts availability? Do these just have a smaller carb or are there other significant differences in the engine? Any parts should still be available ex japan shouldn't they? is $3k a fair price for one of these considering it's got all the road gear and vin? What sort of power valve problems do they have?
Still kinda undecided on whether it's a good idea to get or not..
For 3k you should be able to get something better than that.

The power valves have a couple of cog's in the mix ones alloy and the other is steel, turning off each other and the alloy one wears out. prick to get to.

parts are not easy to get for these,
they have a smaller carb, different electrics, different piston etc to NZ ones,
i think you would find a more off raod capeable and better bike for $3g,
looks pretty mint tho
